ALBERT L. WARE, OF ARLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR-HOLDBACK.
SPEGIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 635,621, dated October 24:, 1899.
Application filed May 4, 1899i serial No. 715,550. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. WARE, of Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Holdbacks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The invention has reference to improvements in devices adapted to be fixed adjacent to a door and to engage another device secured to the door, whereby the door may be held in the open position.
The object of the invention isto producea simple and efiicientdoor-holdback which may be readily engaged with a complemental door member and which will not tend to accidentally catch the clothing of a person passing the same.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fullydescribed, and pointed out in the claim.
The figure represents a perspective View of a portion of a door with the door member having a keyho1e=slot secured thereto, the wall member of the door holdback being shown adjacent to the same with the holdback-arm dotted in position in the keyholeslot.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
The improved holdback device comprises two separated parts, which when in use to carry out the objects sought to be accomplished by this invention are brought together in operative combination to secure the door in the open position; but it is evident from the construction of the device that these parts may be so mounted and arranged that the door may be held closed by the same means.
In carrying my invention into practice I take a screw 5, having the ring 6, and on this ring I secure the ring 7 of the holdback-bar 8, which is furnished at its free end with the head or enlargement 9. The screw 5, representing the mounting for the swiveled holdback-bar, is fastened in the wall or other fixed structure toward which the door swings and to which it is desired to secure the door. The holdback-bar being swiveled is free to be readily swung sidewise or up and down.
On the door A is secured over a recess the plate 10, having a so-called keyhole-slot. Into the larger portion 11 thereof the end 0 of the bar 8 is inserted and allowed to drop into position where the bar Srests in the narrow portion 12 of the slot, thus securing the door.
The device presents a neat appearance when attached in place and is durable and readily adjusted to engage or disengage the keyhole-slot of the door. When disengaged, it presents no portions which are liable to catch the clothing of persons passing the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The holdback comprising the screw 5 having the ring 6, and the ring 7 secured in the ring 6 and having the bar 8 With the end 9, as and for the purpose described ALBERT L. IVARE.
