ADJUSTABLE ORNAMENTAL COMB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,680, dated February 23, 1904:.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. HINEs, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Ornamental Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

This invention relates to toilet articles, and particularly to that class thereunder known as combs.

An object of the invention is to provide a comb and in combination therewith novel means for carrying an ornament, such as a ribbon or the like.

Furthermore, an object of the invention is to provide novel means for permitting the movement of the ribbon-containing device in order that the said device may be readily accessible for the application of the ribbon or ornament thereto.

Furthermore, an object of the invention is to provide novel means for preventing disengagement of the ornament from the holder, the said means comprising spur-like projections formed with the holder and extending into the opening through which the ribbon passes.

Furthermore, an object of the invention is to provide novel means for retaining the holder (hereinafter to be termed a buckle) in contact with the comb or at approximately right angles thereto according to the adjustment of the parts.

Finally, an object of the invention is to produce a comb of the character noted which will possess advantages in points of simplicity, efficiency, and durability, providing at the same time satisfactory use, and comparatively inexpensive tomanufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangements and combination of parts, to be hereinafter more fully set forth, and specifically claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several parts, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation showing the combined comb and holder embodying the inventionwith the ribbon applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the ribbon removed. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the ribbon holder standing at approximately right angles to the comb. Fig. 4 is an end View with the parts in the same position as in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line X X of Fig. 2.

In the drawings, 6 indicates the comb, provided with a neck 7, curved to overlie the comb and terminating in a head 8, the said head 8 having a slot 9 for the reception of the tongue 10, the said tongue having a pivot-like bearing in the slot 9 of the head. The buckle 11 has an opening 12 near each end, the walls of which are of irregular contour and in the formation of which spurs or points 13 are produced, which are designed to engage the fabric in order to prevent its displacement in either direction. This irregular contour also serves the further function of ornamenting the buckle, as is fully shown in the drawings.

The tongue 10 has a gooseneck extension 14, which passes through the slot 9 and terminates in a cross-head15, the edge of which is concaved, as at 16, or otherwise shaped to the contour of the comb 6, with which it is designed to engage. The-width of the crosshead is slightly greater than the distance between the head 8 and the comb 6 when the parts are in their normal position, so that it will be necessary for the neck 7 to yield somewhat in order to permit the cross-head to pass between the head 8 and the comb 6, this action having a tendency to prevent the crosshead from accidentally passing from the position of the parts as shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 1, and vice versa, except where force is applied by manipulation, it being understood that this arrangement of parts is to prevent the accidental movement of the buckle relative to the comb.

The fabric 17 is applied to the buckle, as shown in Fig. 1, and as the spurs engage the fabric on its upper and lower surfaces said spurs will have a tendency to prevent movement of said fabric within the buckle. It is of course my purpose to be unlimited with respect to the ornament to be placed in the buckle, as that may be varied to suit the fancy of the user.

While I have shown the comb, neck, and head formed of a singlepiece of material and have shown the buckle and its tongue formed of two pieces of material, it is not my purpose to be limited to this construction and arrangement of parts, as it is apparent that this may be variously modified to suit particular requirements.

The operation of the device and its use will, it is thought, be apparent from the foregoing description, and the proportions and details of construction may be changed without departing from the scope of the invention.

Having fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described,a comb having a neck and head, the said head having a slot, a buckle having a tongue with a gooseneck extension pivoted in the slot of the head, the said tongue having a cross-head traveling between the comb and its head.

2. In a device of the character described, a comb having a neck and head, the said head being slotted, a buckle having openings of irregular contour with spurs of points projecting into the openings, an ornament run through the openings of the buckle, the tongue on the buckle having a cross-head on its end, the said tongue being pivoted in the slot of the head, and the cross-head lying between the head and the comb.

3. In a device of the character described, a comb having a neck and head, said neck being curved back over the comb, and the said head having a slot, a buckle having a curved tongue fitted in the slot, a cross-head on the end of the tongue, the said cross-head having a concaved edge and being of greater width than the distance between the head and the comb.
