UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. REYNOLDS, OF WEST TOLEDO, OHIO.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 714,033, dated November 18, 1902.
I Application filed November 19, 1901. Serial No. 82,876. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. REYNOLDS, of West Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Snap-Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved snap-hook. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line II II of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is an inverted perspective view, of the tongue and spring removed from the hook.
My invention relates to that class of snaphooks wherein a spring pressed swinging tongue is used, and is designed to do away with the coiled springs ordinarily used in this type of snap-hook and provide a simple and strong construction.
In the drawings, 2 represents the shank and 3 the hook portion of the snap-hook, the shank having the usual loop 4 at its end. The shank is provided with a chamber having sides 5 5 and an open top, the bottom of this chamber having a hole 7. The swinging tongue 8, having the guiding portions 9 9 at its front end, is pivoted within the rear end of the chamber by a pin 10, extending through the sides of the chamber and the flanges of the tongue. A flat U-shaped spring 11 is seated within the tongue, its lower and shorter leg resting on the bottom of the chamber, while its upper and preferablylonger leg acts upon the tongue and forces it against the hook portion of the snap.
It will be noted that the tongue is provided at its rear end with a bent or curved flange 12, which closes its rear end and rests within the curved rear end of the chamber.
The advantages of my invention result from the use of the fiat spring with the swinging tongue and from the doing away with the ears previously used Within the tongue, the tongue being placed bet-ween two ears. By the use of this flat spring a better spring action is obtained. The spring is shorter and the snap is more desirable than where a coiled spring is used for the tongue.
Changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from my invention.
I claim- A snap-hook having an end loop, the shank of the hook having a central open-top chamber with a rear end wall and side ears, a tongue pivoted upon a pin extending through the side walls of said chamber and arranged toswingindependentlyof the loop, saidtongue having rear side flanges extending downwardly within said ears and front side flanges extending downwardly so as to embrace the portion of the shank intermediate the hook and the chamber, and a U-shaped spring extending around the pivot-pin and having a lower leg bearing on the floor of the chamber and an upper leg bearing against the inner face of the tongue; substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
