IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,779, dated November 5, 1872; antedated November To all whom it may concern:
ers, and other similar implements; and I do' hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a plan of a part of a standard passing through a beam of a plow and secured by means of my improved device; Figs. A3 and 4, views of detached parts.

The object of this invention is to provide a more permanent, durable, and unyielding fastening than the wooden key or the wooden and iron keys combined in common use and also to strengthen the beam at the point where the greatest strain is exerted. It consists of a slotted wedge of iron, shown in Fig. 3, the standard passing through the slot thereof, and being secured by au iron key, Fig. 4. The wedge is held in its place by a common screw driven into the beam through a narrow portion of the slot at the front end of the wedge, as herein set forth.
In the drawing,-B is the beam, and S the standard. Fig. 3 is the wedge, shown at W in Figs. l and 2; and Fig. 4, also shown at K in Figs. 1 and 2, is the key. s is the screw. The slot in the wedge is made longer than the width of the standard, so that when the key is in place it is tightened by sliding the wedge forward. The key, Fig. 4, is made with projecting lianges at the top, and is made to pass easily through a hole in and near the upper end of the standard.
Vhen thestandard is driven through the beam the wedge is put on and slid Vback to admit the key to enter over its thinnest part. The Wedge then being driven forward, the key is pressed upward and held by its anges from ever getting out of place. thinnest end of the wedge the slot is narrowed to the thickness ofthe screw, whiclrholds the wedge from workin g loose. This narrow slot is so formed that, if it becomes necessary to drive the wedge at any time, it is not prevented from moving forward, and it is .held in its ne'w position by simply tightening thescrew.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the slotted Wedge W embracing the standard S, and the removaa ble notched key K fitting into a slot of the standard, as and for the purpose herein spec itied.
