Description

STATES Patented July 18, 1905.
PATRICK W. MoFAIiL, OF MADISON, ARKANSAS.
PLQW-COLTER FASTENER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,731, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed A ril28,1905. Serial No. 257,876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK W. MoFALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of St. Francis and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Plow-Colter Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows, and has for its object to provide a simply-constructed and easily-applied device whereby the colter members may be attached to the beams.
WVith this and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted bylike designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the sha e, proportions, and general assemblage of t e parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the beam of a plow with the improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a lan view of the same.
T e improved device comprises a plate 10 for attachment, as by bolts 11 12, to the upper face of the beam of a plow, a portion of which is represented at 13, the plate having an aperture (indicated by dotted lines at 28) and the beam 13 having a substantially vertical slot (indicated by dotted lines at 14) registering with the aperture in the plate 10.
Rising from the plate 10 is a lug 16, having a substantially vertical recess 17 open on one side and continuing three sides of the aperture 28.
The slot 14, aperture 28, and recess 17 are to receive the'stock of a colter or like implement or member, the stock being represented at 18.
The recess 17 is of less depth than the thickness of the stock 18, as indicated in Fig.
2, and extending over the 111 16 and bearing upon the stock is a clamp-p ate 19, secured in position by clamp-nuts 20 21.
The plate 10 is provided with transverse ribs 22 23, entering cavities in the beam 13 to increase the stability of the device and preventing the whole strain coming upon the bolts 11 12.
Disposed upon the under surface of the beam 13 is a late 24, extending to the forward end of t e beam and preferably turned up in front of the same, as at 25, and secured, as by bolts 26, the bolts 11 12 also passing through the plate 24, as shown, and the plate provided with an aperture (indicated by dotted lines at 27 in Fig. 1) registering with the slot 14 and aperture 13, and through which the stock 18 also passes. By this simple arrangement it is obvious that a very compact, strong, and durable coupling device is provided for securing the colter-stock and similar implement or member to the beam, which will effectually resist all tendency to displacement under the severe strains to which such devices are subjected when in action.
The device may be readily adapted without material changes or modifications to all the variousforms and sizes of wood plowbeams.
It will be noted that the strains bothlateral and longitudinal are borne by the metal parts, and the wood relieved almost entirely from strains, thereby materially increasing the, value and efficiency of the device.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a plow, the beam having a substantially vertical slot, a plate for attachment to said beam and having an aperture for registration with said beam-slot and provided with a lug extending above the same and provided with a recess continuing three sides of said aperture, said slot aperture and recess for receiving the stock of a colter member 5 and the recess being of less depth than the thickness of said stock, a clamp-plate extending over said lug and bearing upon said stock, itnd means for attaching said plate to said 2. In a plow, the beam having a substantially vertlcal slot, a plate for attachment to said beam and having an aperture for registration with said beam-slot and provided with a lug extending above the same and provided with a recess continuing three sides of said aperture, said slot aperture and recess for receiving the stock of a colter member, a clamp-plate extending over said lug and bearing upon said stock, and means for attaching said plate to said lug.
3. In a low, the beam having a substantially vertical slot, a plate disposed upon the under surface of the beam and extending to the forward end of the same and bolted thereto and provided with an aperture registering with said slot, a plate for attachment PATRICK W. MOFALL.
