Description

PATENTED SEPT: 20, 1904 W. N ALLEN. PLOW ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION nun MAR. 11, 1904.
N0 MODEL.
Inventor.
Patented September 20, 1904.-
WILLIAM N. ALLEN,
OF IRONTON, OHIO.
PLOW ATTACHIVI ENT- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.,7'70,412, dated September 20, 1904.
Application filed March 11, 1904.
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM N. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ironton, in the county of Lawrence and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plow attachments; and it has for its object to provide a device simple in construction and easily applied by means of which plows of ordinary construction may be employed in gangs composed of any desired number of units.
The invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of embodiment of the invention, it being understood, however, that I do not necessarily limit myself to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but reserve the right to any changes, alterations, and modifications which may fairly fall within the scope of the invention and which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the utility of the same.
.Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved plow attachment. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view showing a pair of plows spaced and connected by my improved attachment.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like numerals of reference.
My improved plow attachment comprises in its preferred form an upper and a lower plate, (designated, respectively, 1 and 2,) said plates being provided on proximate sides with alternate ribs 3 and recesses 4, adapted to interlock with each other and to secure the said plates against transverse movement with relat ion to each other. Each of the plates 1 and 2 is provided with a pair of transverse slots 5 for the reception of connecting members, which have been illustrated as comprising bolts 6 and nuts 7 Washers 8 are inter- Serial No. 197,692. (No model.)
posed between the nuts and the proximate plate.
The lower plate 2 is provided at one edge with a downwardly-projecting flange 9, extending from its rear edge in a forward direction, but not entirely to the front edge of the plate. The front edge of the flange 9 merges with a transversely-disposed flange 10, which depends from the top plate 2. The flanges 9 and 10 are provided with perforations 11 for the passage of bolts or other suitable fastening devices by means of which the said flanges may be securely connected with the front end of the plow-beam 12, with which the plate 2 is thus securely connected, said plate extending, as will be seen, some distance in front of the plow-beam, to which it is attached.
The upper plate or member of the device is provided at the end which is distant from the end of the plate 2, having the dependent flange 9, with a depending flange 14, having perforations, as 15, for the reception of fastening members, by means of which it may be connected to the side of a plow-beam 16 at a suitable distance in the rear of the front end of said beam.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the .foreoging description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The plates or connecting members 1 and 2 having been attached to the respective plow-beams in the manner indicated, said plates are connected by means of V the bolts 6, the plow-beams being spaced any suitable distance apart by properly adjusting "the plates 1 and 2 with relation to each other,
this being readily accomplished prior to the placing of the bolts or connecting members by properly adjusting the interengaging ribs and recesses of the respective plate members.
.It is obvious then that by simply tightening the bolts the plow-beams to which the plates have been attached will be connected with a degree -of rigidity that absolutely precludes the possibility of their being displaced or their relative positions distorted when the device is in'operation as a gang-plow. The importance of such rigid connection is so well known as not to require to be enlarged upon, and this rigidity is established not only by the interlocking of the plate members 1 and 2 with each other, but also by the securing means with which said plate members may be connected with the respective plow-beams. It will be seen especially that the lower plate member 1, which isattached to the nose of the rear plow-beam, will be connected therewith by fastening means extending through the flanges 9 and 10, which are at right angles to each other, thereby forming a connection which will prevent the plow-beam from swaying, and it will insure the plow being kept in the direct line of the draft. It will also be seen that the draft upon the second and upon each succeeding plow will be applied directly to the front end of the beam, the advantage of which in keeping the plow in the desired line of action is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is I l. A device for connecting plow units to constitute a gang, consisting of a member having a dependent flange adapted to be attached to the side of a plow-beam, a member having dependent flanges at right angles to each other adapted for attachment to the nose of a plowbeam, and means for operatively connecting said members.
2. A device for connecting plow units to form a gang, the same consisting of a member having a dependent flange adapted to be connected with the side of a plow-beam, a
member having depending flanges at approximately right angles to each other, and means for adjustably connecting said members to space the plow-beams connected therewith any desired distance apart.
3. A device for connecting plow units to constitute a gang, the same consisting of a member having a dependent flange adapted to be connected with the side of a plow-beam, a member having depending flanges at approximately right angles to each other adapted to be connected with the nose of a plow-beam, and a connecting means for said members, the latter being provided with alining slots for the passage of said connecting means, and said members being provided in their proximate faces with longitudinally-disposed interengaging alternate ribs and grooves.
4. A device for connecting plow units to constitute a gang, the same comprising a memberhaving a downwardly-extending flange to be connected with the side of a plow-beam, a member having downwardly extending flanges approximately at right angles to each other adapted to be connected with thenose of a plow-beam, interengaging locking means upon the approximate faces of said members, and means for connecting the latter in adjusted position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM N. ALLEN.
