J. T. PRIOR.
n PLOW AND OULTIVATOR. COMBINED. No. 286,485. Patented Oct. 9, 1883.

UNITED STATES -rricn.
A'rnnr PLOW AND CULTIVATOR COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,485, dated October 9, 1883.
Application filed January 23 1883. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jenn T. PRIOR, acitizen of the United States, residing at Priors Station, in the county of Polk and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flow and Cultivator Oombined, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to therao companying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cultivators; and it has for its objects to provide improved means whereby the plowstandards and plowshares may be adjusted and secured, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved cultivator; Fig. 2, a top viewpf a portion of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view on the line as a: of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a detached sectional view of one of the standards and the plow share or shovel attached thereto, and Fig. 5 a detached detail front elcvation of one of the lower sections.
The letter A indicates the main beam of the cultivatonwhich is constructed of flanged iron, having acurve at the rear end, which forms the standard for the central or main plowshare. To the said beam are attached at B the plow-handles G by means of a U- shaped bolt, D, passing through suitable apertures in the beam, being secured by means of a pin, E, passing through suitable apertures in the ends of the bolt.
The letter F indicates two side or auxiliary beams, which are curved laterally at their forward ends, as shown. These are attached at said curved ends to the main beam by means of the metallic straps G and the bolts H, being held and adjusted by means of the interposed metallic wedges, I. The said beams are flanged, and curved at their rear ends, so as to form standards for the side plow shares orshovels, (indicated by the letter K.)
The letter L indicates a series of metallic sections curved to correspond to the curved ends of the standards. The said sections are slotted longitudinally from their upper to near their lower ends, and are adapted to set upon. the lower ends of the standards, between the flanges thereof. The web of each standardis provided with apertures N, and the sections with an aperture, P, through which may be passed a bolt, R, by means of which the sec- These are arms of the bolts is provided with ahead, X,
the said bolt passing through an aperture in the plowshare, and the other is bent at its forward end so as to engage the upper edge of the share, the wedges being passed between i the bent ends of the bolts and the rear part of the sections in opposite directions, as in dicated.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the above description, and is as follows: When the an 7 paratus is designed to be used as a single plow, the side beams and their attachments are taken off. When it is desired to use it as a gang-plow, the side beams are secured, by the means hereinbefore described, in such position as to be all in line or one ahead of the other, as may be desired. They may also be diverged to any desired extent by securing them at different points at their curved forward ends. tio'ns may be adjusted to the standards so as to carry the plowshares at any desired height.
Having thus describedmy inventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the beams, of the longit'udinally-slotted adjustable sections, and the plowshares, U-shaped connections, and wedges, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the beams having apertures in their curved ends, of the bolts or, fastening devices, and the longitudinally-slotted adjustable sections adapted to embrace the web and to fit between the flanges, substan- 10o tially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J'O lElN T. PRIOR.
