Description

D. K. MILLER.
PLOW.
Patented Oct. 23, 1883.
Ill
INVBM R.
DAVID K. MILLER, OF ROOKBRIDGE BATHS, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JAMES WILLIAM LACKY, OF SAME PLACE.
PATENT Prion,
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part, of Letters Patent No. 287,148, dated October 23, 1885.
' Application filed June 27, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID K. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, of Rockbridge Baths, in the county of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this-specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hand-plow, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. 1
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of hand-plowsfor garden use which consist of a beam having a guidewheel in its front end, a share or digger at its rear end, and two rearwardly-projecting handles, by which the plow is pushed through the ground; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a plow, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, in which the pitch of the share may be adjusted.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the plowbeam, which is preferably S-shaped, and of malleable or wrought iron, and which forms a shoe, B, at its lower end, to which the share 0 is'fastened. I prefer to construct the shoe with an eye or enlarge ment, D, which forms a bearing for the plowshare. Through this eye I insert a bolt, E, provided with a nut, F, so that by loosening the nut and removing the bolt the share can be readily removed and another substituted for it, according to the nature of the work which the plow is to do. To the upper end or front part of the beam is bolted a forked piece, G, which forms bearings in its lower ends for a wheel, H, by which the plow is guided, and which may be of any desired construction.
.I I are the handle-bars, which are bolted to the top of the beam at J, and connected to its lower part or shoe by two converging braces,
K, which are hinged at their lower ends to the rear portion, M, of the beam, which is hinged to the front portion, moving in a vertical plane, and the upper ends of the braces K slide in sleeves N, provided with set-screws O, and secured upon the upper ends of the handle-bars. The handle-bars are connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar, L, and the plow is propelled' by grasping it by the handles and pushing it through the soil, in the usual manner for this class of plows, the pitch of the plow being adjusted by loosening the set-screws, adjusting the braces in the sleeves, and again fastening them, raising or lowering the rear end of the beam, and thereby making the pitch of the share steeper or more inclined, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- The combination of a plow-beam having its rear portion hinged, swinging in a vertical plane and forming a shoe, and having a bifurcated piece at its front end, a removable and adjustable share fastened to the said shoe, fixed handles having sleeves at the upper ends pro- I vided with set-screws, a crossbar bracing the 1 upper ends of the handles, converging bracerods hinged to the rear hinged portion of the plow-beam and sliding with their upper ends in the aforesaid sleeves, and a guide-wheel journaled in bearings in the ends of the bifurcated piece at the front end of the beam, all constructed and combined as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID KOUTUTH MILLER.
