UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GAMMILL, OF LA FAYETTE, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES W. ALFORD AND KINOHEN B. ALFORD,
OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,885, dated June 15, 1880,
Application filed February 4, 1880.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GAMMILL, of La Fayette, in the county of Ohambers, and in the State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon, makin g a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art I 5 to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, refer ring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my plow.
:0 Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of the same.
A represents the plow-beam, constructed in any suitable manner, and provided with the handles B B, which have their lower ends securely bolted to the beam.
The plow-foot O is made of a single piece of metal bent in the center to form two parallel arms, or it may be made in two pieces when a solid piece is to be welded to the lower ends. The plow-foot is bent upon the arc of 0 a circle, so that when the shovel is put olrthe earth will gradually rise and clear itself without danger of clogging. The upper end of the plowfoot O straddles the beam A and is attached thereto by a bolt, a, in front of the 3 5 handles. There are two or more holes in each side of the plow-foot, so thatthe same may be adjusted up or down, as required, while it may also be adjusted at any angle desired.
D D represent two braces curved on the same circle as the plow-foot, and connected near their lower ends by a block, I), inserted and bolted between them. The upper ends of the braces D are provided with a series of Between the lower ends of the braces D is hinged a block, F, the lower edge of which is turned to form a wide hook or flange, i, as shownin Figs. 2 and 3, for the purpose of taking into any one of a series of notches, w 00, made in the rear edge of the plow-foot at the lower end.
G is the shovel, which is fastened to the foot by a single bolt, h, said bolt passing through the shovel between the two parts of the foot and through the block F, and a nut, c, is then screwed on the end of the bolt, thus firmly securing all the parts by a single bolt.
It will readily be seen that the plow can be easily and quickly adjusted in any position required, according to the character of the land and the work to be done.
My invention is equally applicable to gangplows as to single plows.
- -Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the plow-beam A, of the adjustable plow-foot 0, provided with notches 0c, the adjustable braces D D, the block F, hinged between the lower ends of the braces and provided with the flange 2', the shovel G, and bolt h, with nut c, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of January, 1880.
GEORGE W. GAMMILL.
