GEORGE W. PETERSON, OF OXFORD, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN QULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,449, dated June 10, 1879; application filed March 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PETER- SON, of Oxford, in the county of Oalhoun and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of I reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my improved cultivator and Fig. 2 is a detail view, showing the plow-handles adjusted to different positions by means of the link.
This invention has relation to improvements in cultivators; and the nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a pivoted elbow-link with the handles, braces, and frame of a cultivator, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the main draft-frame, bent outward in rear to receive the shovel standard and brace; and B represents its fellow, similarly bent, but in the opposite direction. These two frames therefore form a loop-frame, the rear ends of which are flanged at a a, and between said flanges a recess, a, is adapted to receive a swinging elbow -link, b, of angular form, which is pivoted to the flanges by means of a bolt c, which passes through the flanges a and the lower portion of said link, and by screwing up the nut upon bolt 0 the handles and braces are firmly secured in position after adjustment.
B B indicate the handles, the forward ends of which are connected to the frames A B by means of a bolt, d, and a series of perforations,
e. In rear the handles are braced by a transverse round, g, and downwardly extending bent braces or connections h, having on their lower ends flanges 1), between which the longer arm of the link I) is pivoted by means of a bolt, 0. 1
Thus it will be seen that the link I) is pivoted at both ends, but may be rigidly secured at. its lower end by screwing up the nut upon the bolt 0, so as to secure the parts firmly in place. By loosening bolt 0' and removing bolt (1 the forward ends of the handles may be adjusted to any one of the series of the holes 0 and the link I) moved forward or backward, and then, by replacing bolt 01 and screwing up the nut upon bolt 0, the handles and braces may be secured in any desired position.
The link I) may be adjusted independent of the adjustment of the forward ends of the handles, so as to adapt the latter to the height of the plowman.
I claim- A cultivator having the bent loop-beams A B, perforated in front and having their faces flush with each other, and provided on their rear ends with flanges a a, adapted to receive one end of the adjustable pivoted elbowlink b, the other end of said link pivoted to the bent flanged braces h It, said braces engaging the upper ends of the handles B B, and the lower ends of said handles being adjusted to said beams A B by means of the adjustable bolt d, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WASHINGTON PETERSON.
