IMPRQVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,961, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WELLS O. MOGOOL, of Guthrie Centre, Guthrie county, State of Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to improve my riding attachment for plows and harrows, patented May 21, 1872, No. 126,976. It consists, first, in a clevis adapted to hitch two or more horses; second, in a heel attachment for keeping the plow in a perpendicular position; all as hereinafter fully set forth.
My drawing is a miniature perspective view of a common plow with my riding attachment connected, and illustrates the manner of forming and operating my improvements.
A is an adjustable rack linked to the pivoted standard upon which the castor is mounted. B is an upright slotted bar, through which the rack A is passed and operated. This may be fastened to the plow-beam in any common way. The handle at the rear end of the rack is in reach of the operator. By lifting the rack and pulling it to the front and rear the castor is alternately elevated and lowered, and the point of the plow thrown in and out of the ground at the will of the opera or represent a half-section of a metal clevis of common form connected with the side of the beam and the front part of the main clevis. The front end of this half-section clevis a a extends laterally, and has a series of holes by which the double-tree and draft may be adjusted away from the center of the beam} When two or more horses are attached the plow is sometimes inclined to take too wide a furrow. By means of the half-section clevis the draft is readily adjusted to suit the width of furrow desired. 1) b is an oblong metal clevis with swivel-hooks on the ends and a movable bolt passingthrough vertically near its front end. The bolt 0 is also passed through the bar connecting the front ends of the extensible rods 0 O, and forms a simple adjustable means of combining my riding attachment with the plow. The doubletree or evener designed to pass through the oblong clevis b b is also secured and pivoted by means of the bolt 0. D D is a skeleton heel, of L-form, attached to the base of the plow and one of the plow-handles. When the point of the plow is elevated by means of the rack and castor, this skeleton heel D D serves to keep the plow in a perpendicular position. E is a common box'attached to the axle for the purpose of carrying seed when the riding attachment is used in connection with a harrow.
