Description

(No Model.) I
O. A. HAGUE.
Jointer.
Patented June 2,1881.
mt nesHeJ N. PETERS, PhokrLithc UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
CHARLES A. HAGUE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FURST & BRAD- LEY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or SAME PLAon.
JOINTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,124, dated June 21, 1881.
Application filed October 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs A. HAGUE, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jointers or Skim-Oolters, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in
- prove their vertical and lateral adjustments;
and its nature consists in an improved construction of the parts, and in so connecting the colter to the beam that it can be raised or lowered as a whole and adjusted in pitch and side draft by the same devices.
In the drawings, A indicates a cross-section ofa plow-beam; B, the front bracket; O,'a cast plate having horizontal flanges fitting against the top and bottom of the beam; D,'the rear bracket; E, the brace-landside; F, the point;
G, the mold-board; a, b, c, d, l, and m, bolts; 6, f, g, and h, slots; and 'i j k lateral projections on the bracing landside.
The brackets B and D are made of wroughtiron or of malleable cast-iron, and are provided with slots 9' and h in their vertical parts, and their lower ends are bent or turned under the plow-beam, as shown at Fig. 2. Between the first bracket, B, and the beam I place a cast plate, 0, to prevent the wearing of the beam and to hold the bracket steady. This plate 0 is provided with horizontal flanges fitting against the beam above and below. A similar plate may be used for the rear bracket, D; but as the strain is much lighter on this bracket I have not found it necessary 'to apply one. The back of the plate may be provided with vertical ears or ribs to steady the bracket, as shown at Fig. 4. The plate E is cast in the form shown, its lower and front end serving (No model.)
point F, which is held by the bolt 1.
The mold-board and point may be made in one piece, if desired; but I prefer to make them separate, as shown, so as to renew the point when worn with less expense.
The upper part of the bracing landsi'de is provided with lateral projections z'j, which fit against the lower parts of the brackets, as shown, and are each provided with slots f e for the lateral adjustment of the colter by means of the clamping-bolts 0 cl. The height of the colter and its pitch are adjusted by means of the slots 7 h of the brackets and the bolts to b.
The device is to be attached to the plowbeam in front of the plow, and as it is adjusted both vertically and laterally it can be applied to all ordinary varieties of plows without being specially constructed for the various heights of plows or variations of beam, the plate 0 being the only part which requires any special fit, and by the construction shown the colter can be easily and nicely adjusted in height, pitch, and side draft, or either.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. The vertically-adjustable front and rear brackets, B and D, arranged at the side of the plow-beam, and each having its lower end bent, as described, in combination with the colter E, having the front and rear ends ofits upper longitudinal portion connected with the bent ends of the brackets to form two points of connection between the plow-beam and the colter, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the adjustable brackets B D with the bracing landside E, having slotted lateral projections t'j, substantially as The lower end is provided with a
