T. MEIKLE.
GOLTER GOUPLER PLATE.
Patented Ma.1.29, 1887.

THOMAS MEIKLE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COLTER-COUPLER PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360.034, dated March 29, 1887.
Application filed January 1Q, 1887. Serial No. 224,138. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MEIKLE, of Louisville, in Jefferson county, Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in OouplingPlates for Attaching Oolters to Plow-Beams, either metallic or wooden; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate' accountofthe same.
Hy colter relates to that class known as easter-colters, and the object is to attain a lateral and vertical adjustment for the pivot or pintle ofthe caster-colter arm, whereby the point of draft for said colter may be set to the right or left horizontally, and the colter itself set up or down in avertical plane. I am aware that these adjustments are not new; but I am not aware that they have heretofore been effected by a simple angle-plate of wrought-iron so cheaply made and easily adjusted.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspectivewiew of my coupling plate detached. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line A is the plow-beam,which maybe of iron or wood, as preferred.
B isniy coupling plate, made of wroughtiron or steel, and longitudinally bent at an angle of ninety degrees, so that the part a stands at right angles to the part Z). The part a is provided with four rows of holes, c c, the tirst and third row being separated by the same distance as the second and fourth, so that the t'asteuingbolts (l c may be used in either series, as desired.
. The object of the holes c in rows and series is to permit the vertical and longitudinal adjustment of the coupling-plate without requiring numerous holes to be made in the beam A, and the advantage of making said plate of thin wrought-iron or steel is in its consequent capability of beingput on either side of the plowbeam, and thus increase the range of lateral adjustment without increasing the lateral extension of said plate. This is shown in Fig.
3. rlhe part b is provided with a hole, f, for
a pivot-bolt, r/,whieh attaches and centers the colter pintle H, which is provided with an langle arm or extension, t', for the purpose of engaging the part b at a distance from the pintle H, so that the latter may be capable of a lateral swing on the pivot-bolt g. The part b is also provided with a slot, 7i, curved on the holef as a center, and abolt,j, passes through said slot and through the part rto lock and hold said part in position, but with liberty to be swung inward or outward in said slot.
The colter-arm K is jointed to the socket L with a horizontal joint-bolt, so that the vertical position of the colter M as to the point of the plow may be changed when desired. The socket L swings freely on the pintle H, so that the colter is free to follow the plow when it changes its direction of advance.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. rlhe wroughtmetal coupling-plate B, having its parts a b at right angles to each other, the part a being provided with holes c c, arrangedin parallel rows and uniformly spaced, and the partb being provided with the pivotholef and slot h.
2. In combination with the plow-beam Aand the colter M, the thin angle-plate B, provided with holes c c in series and parallel rows, and with the pivot-hole f and slot h concentric therewith, whereby the colter may be vertically, laterally, and longitudinally adjusted, as set forth.
3. In combination with the plow beam A and colter M, the angle coupler-plate B, provided with the holes c c in rows and parallel series, and with the pivot-hole f and sloth, and adapted to be bolted to either side of the plow-beam, as set forth, the pintle H, having the angle part i, and the bolts g and j, to secure it to said angle coupling-plate, and the socket L, swinging freely on the pintle.
THOMAS MEIKLE.
