RUNNER ATTACHMENT FOR FLOWS.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEsr E. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Gratiot and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Runner Attachments for Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to runners for attachment to the front end portions of plow beams; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the runner attachment. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same showing the plow beam in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of portions of the standard and clamp, showing the spring catch.

A is a portion of a plow beam of any approved construction and a is a plate at the front end of the plow beam provided with holes for the clevis to engage with in the usual manner. B and C are two similar clamping plates, provided with grooves I) and 0 respectively. I/Vhen the two clamping plates are secured together the said grooves form a socket in which a standard I) is slidable vertically. The two plates B and C are clamped together and to the plow beam by bolts cl and a plate E. The plates B and C are arranged upon one side of the plow beam, and the plate E upon the other side, so that when the bolts are screwed up tightly the attachment is prevented from slipping longitudinally. The position of the attachment is adjusted longitudinally whenever desired so as to place it at the most desirable dis tance from the draft plate a. The plates B and C are provided with a socket F in which a spring actuated catchf is slidable, and this catch engages with notchesf in the standard D, so that the said standard may be supported in any desired. position. provided at its lower end with a plate II which is secured to it by a bolt h, and the runner has a disk i which is pivoted on the pin or bolt 9 between the lower end portion of the standard and the plate H. The disk i has stops i which engage with the bolt it so that the motion of the runneris limited.j;'-, The

pressure of the plate II upon the disk '2', is regulated by the bolt h so that the runner may have a suitable freedom of movement without being too loose.

The runner is used instead of a wheel to support the front end of the plow beam, and is more particularly useful in going over uneven, ground. The runner may be set at any desired distance from the beam, or it may be raised up clear of the ground when not required in use.

WVhat I claim is:

1. In a runner attachment, the combination, with a plow beam, of a socket secured to the front end portion of the said beam, a standard adjustable vertically in the said socket, a runner pivoted to the lower end portion of the said standard, and stops for limiting the'pivotal movements of the said runner.

2. In a runner attachment, the combination, with a plow beam, of asocket formed of two separable grooved plates, means for securing the said socket against one side of the said beam, a standard adjustable vertically in the said socket, a runner pivoted to the lower end portion of the said standard, and stops for limiting the pivotal move ments of the said runner.

3. In a runner attachment, the combination, with a plow beam, of a socket formed of two separable grooved plates, means for securing the said socket against one side of the said. beam, a standard provided with a series of notches and adjustable vertically in the said socket, a spring-actuated catch carried by the said socket for engaging with the said notches, and a runner pivoted to the lower end portion of the said standard.

4. In a runner attachment, the combination, with a plow beam, of a socket secured to the said beam, a standard adjustable vertically in the said socket, a plate, a bolt securing the said plate against the lower end portion of the said standard to form a jaw, and a runner provided with a disk which is pivoted in the said jaw and provided with stops for engaging with the said bolt to limit its pivotal movement.
