CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,140, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed May 4, 1887. Serial No. 237,148. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. VINSON, of Mayfield, in the county of Graves and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Glevises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved clevis; and it consists in certain constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figurel is a side elevation of my invention as in use, the beam being shown in section. Fig. 2is aperspective View of the clevis detached from the beam, and Fig. 3 is a detail section illustrating the drafthook and the-front clevis-bar.
The clevis comprises two sections, A and B, the former of which, for convenience of reference, I term the main. section, while the other section may be termed the supplemental plate or section. The main section A comprises the side plate, 0, and the front bar, D, formed a part of and arranged at right angles to the side plate, 0, the frecendor eX- trelnity of said front bar, D,bcing threaded at The side plate, 0, has near its rear end a threaded opening, 2, for the wrench bolt E, and is provided in advance of said opening 2 with an opening, 3, for the fastening bolt or pin F. The sections A B, it will be seen, are connected at their forward ends by the arm D of the plate 0 screwing into the supplemental section, and at their rear ends by the bolt E. By this eonslruetiomit will be seen, the clevis may be quickly adjusted to beams of different thicknesses; and this, too, is attained without necessitating the bending of plates 13 0 toward or from each other, and
without necessitating the front bar being formed separate from both the said plates l3 0. Thus I form the clevis-frame B G D in but two pieees, simplifying the construction and reducing the liability of losing any of the parts. The top plate has at its rear end an opening, 4, for the wrench-bolt, a hole, 5, between its ends for the fastening-bolt F, and a threaded opening, 6, is provided near its forward end for the end of the front bar or arm, D. The
arm D is formed non-circular in cross section, having an eccentric portion or wing, d, extended preferably to the rear, as shown. In
such eccentric wing I form notches d, the arm on a cross-section drawn through sa1d notches being approximately circular, as shown. The
draft-hook G has an opening, 9, formed with an extension or wing, corresponding to the eccentric wing of the arm D. WVhen the hook is turned with its opening 9 in full register with the arm Dand the wings thereof, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, it may be adjusted along said arm to bring the draft-hook at any suitable height to regulate the depth of the plow. I IV hen at the proper height, the drafthook may be turned forward to the position shown in full lines, Fig. 3,when the team may be hitched. It will be seen that to effect an adj ustment of the draft-hook up or down it is only necessary to remove the bolt F and turn the clevis on bolt E, as a pivot, to one side, when the hook may be turned and. adjusted up or down, as desired, and when properly adjusted the clevis may be turned back into line with the beam and the bolt F be reapplied. It will be noticed that the draft-hook cannot be lost unless the supplemental plate be removed, nor even then unless the said hook should be adjusted immediately under such supplemental plate. IVhile the part G, for convenience of reference, is termed a draft-hook, it is manifest that it is not of necessity provided with a hook proper, but might be otherwise suitably constructed to facilitate the connection of the team or other motive power.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. A clevis comprising a main section formed with a base-plate and an. arm or front.
bar extended perpendicularly from the forward end of said base-plate and having its free end threaded, and the supplementalplate having an opening fitted to receive the end of said arm, substantially as set forth.
2. The improved clevis herein described, consisting of the section A, having plate 0 andarm D, extended at right angle from the forward end of plate 0, and having an eccentric wing, (Z, and notches cl therein, and having its point 1 threaded, the plate B, having an opening to receive the'poiut l, and the necessary retainingbolts, substantially as set forth.
3. A clevis, substantially as described, comprising a main section formed with a baseplate and an arm, connected rigidly with such plate at one end thereof and adapted for engagement by the draft-hook, and the'supplemental plate having an opening for the free end of the arm, substantially as set forth.
4. The elevis herein described,e0mprising the section 0, having arln D, formed'with a ring, d, having notches d, and with threaded point 1, the draft-hook G, havingopening g, 10 formed with extension g, the plate B, having opening 6 for point 1, and the bolts E and F, substantially as set forth.
GEORGE W. VINSON.
