No. 158,186. Patented Dec. 29,1874.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HUGH D. SMITH, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,186, dated December 29, 1874; application filed May 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH D. SMITH, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Plows, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of a plow illustrating my improvement. Fig.2 is a detail section taken through the line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a side view of a modification of the same. Fig. 4 is a top View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents a plow-beam, to the side of which is securely attached a cleat, B, in a notch or groove in which the forward or lower edge of the plow-standard O rests and slides, and against which it is locked by a cleat, D, placed upon the rear or upper side of the said standard, and which is notched or grooved to fit upon said standard 0, and enter a notch. in its rear side. Several notches are formed in the standard 0, to receive the cleat B and hold the beam securely, however it may be ad-.
justed. The cleat D is held down upon the standard 0 by a bolt, E, which passes through the said cleat D, and through the cleat B, or the beam A, and which is provided with a ban d-nut, to enable it to be conveniently tightened and loosened. As shown in Fig. 1, the
standard 0 is inclined forward, so as to bring the beam A low down. The lower part of the standard 0 passes back of the mold-board F,
tion of the plow to which it is to be applied, Figs. 3 and 4 show it applied to a vertical standard.
By this construction, by loosening the nut of the bolt E, and moving the cleat D out of the notch of the standard 0, the beam A may be moved up or down upon said standard, the cleat B keeping it always parallel with its former position. i
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the stationary cleat B, the pivoted cleat D, and the bolt E with the plow-beam A and the notched standard 0, substantially as herein shown andescribed.
HUGH D. SMITH. Witnesses:
H. M. AMES, IIUGH A. WATT.
