MOLD-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 427,346, dated May 6, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES 0. Moses, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Adams and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mold-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to mold-boards for plows; and my object is to produce a detachable mold-board which can be readily adjusted to any desired position or angle, and which will be exceedingly durable, effective, and convenient.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of a plowshare and beam provided with my improved moldboards or wings; Fig. 2, a bottom view of the same; Fig. 3, a detail view of the mold-board detached, and Fig. 4 a section on line 00 a: of

The reference-letter A indicates an ordinary plow-standard, and B the share, secured thereto by means of bolts in the 'usual manner. To the under side of this share, on one side or both of the beam, I attach my improved mold-board D, which is of the usual shape, having a straight inner edge I), and a proj ecting rounded portion 1), having a slight inward curve.
I provide this mold-board or wing at its forward part, near the straight edge I), with a series of slots 0, c, and d, the lower edges of which are in alignment. The upper slot 0 is made T-shaped, having a portion 6 parallel to the remaining slots and a portion 6 at right angles thereto, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. The second opening 0 consists simply of a straight slot having a length and width equal to the portion e of the slot 0, while the third slot d is simply a substantially square 0pen.- ing. The mold-board or wing is attached to the share B by means of these slotsand a steel screw or threaded bolt C,which is adapted to enter a correspondingly-threaded aperture fin the share,.and is of such a length that its outer end lies flush with the outer surface of the share when it has been screwed in as far as it is intended to go, as shown in Fig. 1.
The mold-board is applied to the plow by placing the straight edge 1) against the surface of the standard A, and then inserting the bolt 0 in one of the slots and screwing it through the aperture f of the share as far as possible, a washer g being inserted between the head of the bolt and the surface of the wing. The board is adjusted by placing the bolt in the different slots. Thus the highest adjustment of the wing in relation to the share will be obtained when the bolt is placed in the small slot d, and the lowest adjustment when placed in the upper end of the portion e of the slot 0. It is obvious that the wing can be adjusted at any intermediate position by use of the intermediate slots 6 and c, and that it can be placed at any desired angle by fixing the bolt in different parts of the slot. In the drawings it is shown in the slot 6 of the opening 0.
v The advantages of my arrangement are that the slots are so formed in the wing that it can be readily adjusted to any position desired, thus enabling the operator to use a plow having the attachment for a number of different purposes, which cannot be accomplished by the use of an ordinary plow.
The device throws the earth up to and around the hill without injury to the roots. It can be employedv as a scraper or weed-cutter by dropping the wings to their lowest adjustment, and it is also adapted for use as an implement for making irrigating-furrows, as the wings throw the dirt far enough away from the furrow to prevent it falling back in again. It can also be used conveniently as a potato-digger, and in opening up dead-furrows.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a mold-board or wing having a T-shaped slot 0 and the slots 0" (Z, in a line substantially parallel With the standard, but themselves extending; at an angle thereto, a share having a threaded aperture, and a bolt arranged to engage said slots and said aperture, whereby the Wing is both laterally and longitudinally adjustable on said share, substantially as described.
