Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS F. IVAKEMAN, OF SI-IREVEPORT, LOUISIANA.
AIDJUSTABLE LAN DSlDE.
fiPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,216, dated April 28, 1891.
Application filed July 23, 1890. $erial No. 359,706. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LEwIs FARRINGTON \VAKEMAN,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Oaddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Adj ustable Landside for Georgia Iron or \Vooden Foot-Stocks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in an adjustable landside for a plow, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and the objects of my invention are to place upon an ordinary plow, such as are used in the uplands, an attachment that will regulate the depth of cut and which will enable a plow to run steadier. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective side view. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the adjustable slide. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the adjustable slide with mold-board attached. Fig. 4 is a front View.
Similar letters refer to similarparts through-' out the several views.
In the drawings, A shows my adjustable landside of plow, and to which there is attached a slide in which there is a slot, as shown by B. Through this slotI insert aheelbolt, which is passed first through a moldboard, as shown by D, and the head of bolt, as designated by E, is shown in Figs. 1, 3, and at, G indicating a nut, which is adjusted on end of heel-bolt to hold same in position.
F is an iron foot which is attached to beam K of an ordinary Georgia plow-stock.
H is a grass-rod.
G is a piece of metal attached to landside of plow; but where desired the landside may be cast in one piece. The mold-board D (shown for attaching to slide) is anvordinary turning-shovel such as is used in sandy soil or upland.
The mode of operation is the same as in an ordinary wooden or iron Georgia foot-stock plow, with this exception, that by means of my invention a plow may be attached to the landside by placing a bolt through the slot in slide B and mold-board D. hen it is desired to raise the mold-board D, simply loosen the nut G on heel-bolt, slip the bolt and moldboard upward upon the incline or slide in which slot B is situated, and when at a proper height tighten up the nut G, and in this mannera mold-board can be raised or lowered upon the iron foot F, so as to enable it to cut any depth desired or enable a plow as it wears at the point to be used for a much longer period by simply raising the plow upon the slide.
A striking advantage of my invention is that it enables a plow to run steady and lighter, and at same time regulates the depth desired to plow and enabling a boy to use same with ease.
I am aware that it is old in plows to provide a mold-board adjustable upon a stock formed of two parallel bars secured together, so as to form a longitudinal open space between them and to provide a heel-bolt for the attachment of said board to the stock; and I am also aware that it is old to provide an ordinary stock with openings at intervals adjacent to its lower end to receive a heelbolt for the attachment of a slotted moldboard and interposed wedge, and I therefore make no'claim to such devices.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a plow substantially as described, the combination, with a foot consisting of two parallel bars bolted together so as to form an adj usting-space between them for a heel-bolt, of the landside having an integral front upr ght extension slotted as at B, the moldboard D, provided with an aperture adjacent to its upper side to receive a heel-bolt, and the said heel-bolt adapted to take through the mold-board and upright extension of the landside between the parallel bars of the shoe, whereby the mold-board may be adjusted vertically, all adapted to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWVIS F. W'AKEMAN.
