Description
(No Model.) I. H. H. BALTZLE'Y. EL-00D GATE.
No. 420,001. I Patented Jan. '21, 1890-;
avwamfoz HI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLOOD-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,001, dated January 21, 1890. Application filed may I, 1889. Serial No. 309,196. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. BALTZLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at As sumption, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Flood-Gates; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the 'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to flood-gates and means for securing the same against the end of the tiles.
The object of the invention is to prevent water backing up in the tile and exclude vermin and trash therefrom, and construct a gate that will be simple, efficient, and durable, and also prevent the tile from washing out, as well as holding the flood-gate in its place.
The improvement consists of the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, inwhich- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the application of my invention; Fig. 2, a front view of the gate; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the gate on the line X X of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a detail top plan view.
A represents the tiling, of ordinary construction and arrangement.
B is the frame or plate, to which the gate 0 is hinged or pivotally connected at its upper end. An opening his formed in the center of the plate to correspond with the bore or opening of the tiling. The rim or flange D, extending around the bottom and sides of the opening b, near the edge thereof and tapering backward from bottom to top, projects from the face of the plate 13 at right angles and has openings at its upper ends, through which the rod d, to which the gate is attached, passes, the ends of the rod forming journals and being bent at right angles to pre vent the rod slipping out. Amargin is left between the edge of the openingb and the sides of the flange D, against which the gate 0 closes.
The lip or flange E, projecting from the up per rear side of the plate, is designed to rest on the tiling and prevent the settling of the frame or plate B. The notches or slots e in the edges of the plate B communicate at their inner ends with the vertical slots 6, and are designed to receive the rods F, which are passed through the slots e and into the slots 6. The front ends of the rods F are bent up a short distance and thence down, and are entered in the ground, and the rear ends of the rods are similarly bent down and driven into the ground to hold the frame B in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the hereinbefore-described flood-gate, composed of the plate B, having opening I), the flange D, extending around the opening at its bottom and sides, the lip E on its upper rear side, the slots e and e in its edges, and the gate 0, pivoted or hinged between the upper ends of the flange, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the plate having an opening, as b, and having the flange D, which extends around the opening on its bottom and sides and which tapers backward from bottom to top, of the gate and the rod for supporting the gate journaled at its ends in the upper ends of the flange, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the plate having the rear lip to rest on the tiling, of the gate hinged to the front face of the plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination, With the plate having the notches or slots 6 and e in its edges, and the gate hinged to the plate, of the rods F, having their front ends bent substantially as shown and embedded in the ground, and having their rear ends similarly inserted in the ground, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
R. W. MEECH, S. D. MOORE.
