IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED STOVE-HEARTHS AND ASH-FITS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,028, dated April 23, 1872.

SPECIFICATION.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES 0001:, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Posey and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Hearth and Ash-Pits; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined portable hearth and ash-pit with draught and dust-fines, to be used for coal-grates and wood-fire places, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view, and

pit will be underthe coal-grate; or when wood is used the fire is to be built above said ashpit.

In using coal, the ash-pit B is to be left open, or a grated cover, 0, may be used. For wood, a solid cover, D, may be placed on the back part of the pit, and the grated cover 0 in front, or the grated cover in the rear and the solid cover dispensed with entirely.

This hearth and ash-pit, being made together and'portable, may be put in and taken out at pleasure whenever desired.

On the under side of the plate A, across the center, runs a flue, E, the front end of which is open and the rear end closed. In the plate in front of the ash-pit is a register, G, communicatin g with the draught-flue, E, which isto be used for smoking-chimneys to increase the upward draught in the same. In the rear part of the ash-pit B is a short flue, H, extending upward with an opening, a, at the lower end on the front side. This flue is for the purpose of carrying up the dust that will arise in stirring the fire.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combined portable hearth, A, and ashpit B, provided with the covers 0 and D, to be used substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. A combined portable hearth and ash-pit, A B, provided with the draught-flue E and register G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. A combined portable hearth and ash-pit, A B, provided with a dust-flue H, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

4. A combined portable hearth'and ash-pit, A B, provided with covers 0 D, draught-flue E, register G, and dust-flue H, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
