EDWIN B. PATTEN, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR CQOK-STOVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159.350, dated February 2, 1875; application filed August 22, i874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWlN B. PATTEN, of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Gock- Stoves; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, yin which is shown a perspective of my invention.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of the attachment for cook-stoves, upon which I applied for Letters Patent on or about the 23d day of July, 1874; and consists of a modification of the same, whereby it may be adjusted to stoves having fire-boxes of different wid ths.
In the drawing, a shows the dividing-partition, consisting of two parts, b c, sliding past each other. rlhese parts may be constructed with alternate tongues and grooves d e, as shown in the drawing, allowing them to be adjusted to different widths of lire-box, without changing the thickness of the partition, (the open spaces, resulting from extending the V partition, not affecting the utility of said partition 5) or, if desired, may be made in the form of two plates, sliding past each other, as shown in the drawing, at the upper part of the partition. The draft-stopper f is also made in two parts, g h, each attached to the corresponding part b or c of the partition, and adinstable therewith. The partition a and draftstopper f perform the same work as those in my previous application above referred toc'. e., dividing the fire-box of the stove into two portions, in one of which the fire is built, While the grate of the other portion is covered by the draft-stopper, thus forcing the draft through that lportion of the re-boX which is employed as such-thus enabling the lire to be confined to a portion of the grate only, if desired. Through a slot, j, in one portion of the dividing-partition, passes a screw- "bolt, o1, which enables the parts to be secured at any desired point of extension. At k Z are shown triangular side pieces. These are made of different sizes or widths, and are secured by rivets or like devices, when necessary, to the side ofl the partition a, so as to lit said partition to the stove in cases where the rebox has daring sides.
Another device, which is equallyapplicable to this or to the attachment described in my previous application, consists of a check-draft, (shown at m,) being an opening through the draft-stopper f, covered by a sliding plate, n, or like device. By this the draft through the lire-box may be regulated at will. This arrangement is very effective, taking, as it does, the air from the bottom of the grate instead of from the outside, and diminishing the amount that passes through the re.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In an attachment for cook-stoves, having the sliding plates g h, forming a draft-stopper, the combination of the end plates b c, forming the partition, substantially as specilied.
2. In combination, an attachment for cookstoves, consisting of a dividing-partition and draft-stopper, the check-draft m n in said draftstopper, for the purpose of diminishing the volume of air passing through the re, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of August, 1874.
E. B. PATTEN.
