Description

J. MCMURTRY.
Fireplace. No. 31,212. f 'Patented 1an. 22, 1861.
2. ,Seoabm MM I V Maag' rUNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
JOHN MCMURTRY, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO J. A. BOSTWICK, OF SAME PLACE.
FIREPLACE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,212, dated January 22, 1861.
To allwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known thatl I, JOHN MCMURTRY, of the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented a new Improvement in Fireplaces and Grates for Burning Icod or Coal; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my improvement or inven tion consists in making a back to fireplaces or grates of proper thickness to resist the warping of same by the lire, having an air chamber in its rear with a register near the Hoor on one side for the admission of the air from the room, and another register on the opposite side at the top of the air chamber, for the exit of the heated air; also thin ribs placed on the back at short intervals that will keep the wood and coal from coming in contact with the back, thereby leaving a free circulation of air between the back of the fireplace or grate, and thereby securing a more perfect combustion of the fuel; also a damper so constructed in the crown of the fireplace or grate as to control the draft of the chimney, and also to a certain extent prevent the heat from passing up the chimney.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention7 I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I -construct the back to my fireplace or grate of cast iron or any other suit-able material and of suitable thickness to prevent its warping by the heat of the fire, and of the form for casting or reflecting the heat of the fire into the room, as shown` in the accompanying drawing, to which reference is here made, as making a part of this specilication, in which-' Figure l is a front view of the fireplace or grate; Fig. 2, a sectional view showing the form or profile of the back and showing the ribs to keep the fuel from coming in contact with the back for the purposes above named7 also the air chamber with the register for the exit of the heated air, and showing the damper with the simple lever for operating same for the purposes above named, Fig. 3 represents the general plan of same, showing the several parts as 'explained by the letters of reference thereon.
The heated air may be conducted from the air chamber, to the upper stories by flues, and operated by registers in the ordinary way. y
I do not wish to be understood as claiming the invention of'air chambers, or registers, or dampers, and conducting hot air flues, as these have before been known and used, but
vWhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination, of the ribbed, or corrugated back, with the air chamber and registers, as shown in the accompanying drawings, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
