Description

No. 749,837. PATENTED JAN. 19, 1904. M. R. BEEN-ER. VEHICLE TONGUE.
APFLIQATION FILED NOV. 7, 1903.
N0 MODEL.
@mvanfoz q/viXMmaco I UNITED STATES Patented January 19, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
VEHICLE-TONGUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,837, dated January 19, 1904.
Application filed November 7 1903. Serial No. 180,149. (No model.)
To (I/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN R. BRUNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buckland, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Tongues; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a vehicle-tongue either rolled, pressed, or otherwise formed, preferably of sheet-steel; but other metals may be used as found desirable, the purpose thereof being to so construct the tongue that both strength and lightness are secured and enabling it to be manufactured at a comparatively reduced cost over the tubular sheet-metal tongues heretofore in use.
The invention consists in a sheet metal vehicle-tongue constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a vehicle-tongue embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a similar View looking from the under side of thetongue; Fig. 3, a sectional elevation of the front end of the tongue; Fig, 4, a cross-section through the rear end of the tongue, showing the inwardly-extending edges of the side wall thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the top wall of the vehicle-tongue, and
B O the side walls thereof, the edges of theside walls being turned inwardly to prevent any sharp edges coming in contact with the horses legs to remove the danger of cutting or scraping the legs of the horse.
In the manufacture of the tongue a blank of sheet-steel or other metal found most desirable and of suitable thickness, width, and length is pressed or otherwise formed into channel shape, as shown in the drawings, and the edges of the side walls turned under or inwardly at an angle thereto, as shown at a, for the purpose hereinbefore described.
It should be noticed that the vehicle-tongue increases in width from its front end in a direction toward its rear end, which is essential to give strength to the tongue where most needed and also to give the required durability thereto. In addition to this feature of the invention the tongue is so constructed that it increases in depth from its front to its rear end, which is considered of material importance in adding to the rigidity of the tongue and giving increased strength and firmness to the side walls thereof, thereby providing a channel-shaped tongue that will possessstrength, durability, and lightness and a tongue that can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
The smaller or front end of the tongue is provided with the usual loops 6 c and are formed from a rectangular piece of sheet metal, as indicated at D, and bent to form said loops. This strip or piece of metal is of sufiicient length to form a reinforce for the end of the tongue at both the inner and outer sides thereof, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, said strip or piece of metal being secured to the tongue by the rivets (Z c and a short rivet f, the former rivets extending entirely through the tongue to form braces thereof, as well as a fastening means for the piece or strip of metal.
The tongue as above described may be used in connection with vehicles or with any object where atongue would be found useful, and may be of any suitable size and shape to adapt it to the purpose for which it is to be use Having now fully described my invention, what I claim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A channel-shaped vehicle-tongue constructed of sheet metal and having straight side walls the edges thereof extending inwardly at an angle to prevent the sharp edges of the metal coming in contact with the horses legs, said edges being disconnected to leave a space between the same throughout the length of the tongue, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN R. BRUNER.
Witnesses:
JAMES R. MoADAMs, ELLA N. MGADAMS.
