UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARRET VAN WINKLE, OF NORTH.PLAINFIELD,l NEW JERSEY.
KNOB ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent; No. 349,915, dated September 28, 1886.
(No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARRET VAN WINKLE, of North Plainfield, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Knob Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent were granted to me June 23, 1885, No. 320,602, and the same is for adapting the knob attachment to wooden handles especially.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is asection ofthe knob and its shank. Fig. 2 is a side view of the sections of the knobshank, and Figs. 3 and 4 are end views of the same.
ln the aforesaid patent the shank is made of two sections, B and C, secured together by a tubular cover, D, or otherwise, and upon these sections B C are dovetailed portions that are inserted into the mortise or recess in the knob, and to this extent my present invention corresponds to the aforesaid patent, and the manner in which the same areinserted is also similar.
My present improvement relates especially to the shape or form of the ends of the section that pass into the knob. The outer surfaces of the projecting ends a b are convex, and theyl are ribbed transversely, as shown at h h in Figs. 1 and 2. The object of this construction is to allow for securing the shank-sections in the most firm and reliable manner within the knob, especially when the knob is of wood, because the recess in the said knob can be formed by a cutter, and then the sections inserted with one section at an inclination to the other, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to enter the diverging ends a b into the mortise, and then, when the outer ends of the sections are close together and the diverging ends spread apart within the knob lthe ribs or projections upon the outside of such diverging ends embed themselves into the surface of the wood and prevent the possibility of the parts becoming loose.
I claim as my invention- The shank-sections B C, having the diverging projecting ends c b, said ends being conveX on their outer surfaces, and having` ribs or projections thereon, in combination with the knob having the dovetailed recess adapted to receive the shank-sections, substantially as set fort-h.
Signed by me this 23d day of February, A. D. 1886.
GARRET VAN VINKLE.
