PLOWSHARE.
Application filed July 11,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, MATTHEW MAKES, a
: citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Plowshares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to plows and in particular to plows having a removable plow share portion.
One of the objects of this invention is to give a device whereby the plow share can be conveniently locked upon or removed from the plow frog.
Still another object of this invention is to give a device whereby the plow share is counterlocked against lateral play.
A still further object of this invention is to give a device whereby the locked and counterlocked plow share is seated flush with the mold board plate which is attached to the frog.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be hereinafter more clearly set forth in the specifications and pointed out in the claims.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the drawings in which,
Figure 1, is a perspective view of this device in assembled formation. Fig. 2, is a like view with the plow share removed. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the plow share as removed. Fig. 4, is a perspective view partly in section on the line 4;4: of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a sectional edge view on the line 55 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the drawings 1, is the frog having angular sections composing a mold board and a plow share surface 2, and a land slde surface 8. A mold board plate 4 is conveniently attached in any suitable manner but preferably by welding to the top portion of the surface 2 of the frog substantially in the manner as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A land side 5 is attached to the surface 3 of the frog 1 in the manner shown in said figure, said land side having its forward edge with a double bevel comprising a bevel face 6 for the purpose herein- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 119115.
1914-. Serial No. 850,444..
after set forth, and a bevel face 7, said last -mentioned bevel face being flush with the edge 8 of the frog and adapted to seat against the under surface 9 of the plow share.
The plow share as shown in Fig. 3 is adapted to be attached to the frog 1 in such manner that the surface 10 seats over the bevel surface 6 of the land side 5 to allow the surface 9 to seat flush with the surface 7 of said land side and yet have the edge surface 11 of the plow share 12 flush with the outer surface of the land side 5, this will allow the end surface 9 of the plow shar 12 to seat snugly against the mold board surface 2 of the frog 1. It will be noticed that there is a slot 13 having a beveled edge'let asplainly seen in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings, and also a threaded aperture 15. I To seat said plow share 12 a lug 16 which can be integral with th share 12 is attached to the plow share 12, in countersunk fashion. It is inserted in the forward end of the slot 13 and the plow share is then driven in a rearward direction until the beveled surface 17 of said lug seats into and locks against the beveled surface 1% of the frog. This allows the threaded aperture 18 in the plow share 12 to register with the countersunk aperture in the frog so that a locking stub-bolt 19 can lock the plow share to the frog. This locking stub-bolt has a threaded shank portion 20 and ahead portion 21, said head portion being countersunk in the plow share 12, and said head portion has a square notch or recess 22 therein adapted to seat a key or other form of screwing device to lock said bolt home. The act of driving the plow share rear- -ward, causes the surfaces 9 and 10 previously described to seat over the beveled surfaces 6 and 7 aspreviously described, and at the same time allows the offset portion 23 of the plow share 12 to rest against the surfaces 24 and 25 of the mold board plate 4. This arrangement locks the plow share against movement in any direction, forms.
plate 4:, and the rear end of the plow share 12 in any suitable manner. Of course it is to be understood that a mold board of any suitable construction is adapted to be at- ,tached along the upper edge 27 of the mold board plate 4 and the upper edge 28 of the plow share 12, and as this arrangement is not a part of this invention, hence it is not shown.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A plow share comprising a frog'having an angular land side section and a'plow share section, a land side having a double beveled forward edge, outwardly and inwardly sloped, and apidw share upon said plow share section having a laterally projecting edge-like portion to meet and seat upon said beveled surfaces.
2. A plow share comprising a frog having a land. side and a plow share surface, a substantially rectangular plow share section upon the upper portion of the share surface of said frog, and a plow share having an offset portion attached to the plow share surface of said frog in such manner as to overlap said land side, said plow share having a right angular offset portion adapted to seat around said plow share section.
3. A plow share comprising a frog having a threaded aperture in the forward portion and having a slot beveled at the rear edge, in the rearward portion, a land side havingtwo beveled faces upon its forward edge, a plow share having a laterally projecting edge to seat over one of the beveled edges of said land side, and having a threaded aperture therethrough adapted to with the aperture in said frog, a lug having one side beveled, protherefrom to seat and lock in said beveled slot, and means threaded in said registering apertures to lock the forward portion 0 said plow share.
4. A plow share comprising a frog having approximately right angular sections with a threaded aperture ward portion and a slot, having a beveled rear edge, through the rearward portion, a land side having an angular forward edge upon one of the angular sections of said frog, so that one of the angles of said forward edge is flush with the opposite angular section of said frog, a substantially rectangular share section upon the upper portion of said frog, a plow share having a right angular offset portion adapted to seat around said share section, and having an angular seat over the angular edge of said land side, and with an aperture adapted to register with the aperture in said frog, a projection, beveled upon one side, projecting from the rear portion of said plow share and adapted to enter and be locked in said slot means, threaded in said apertures to lock the forward portion of said plow share,
register squared j ecting through the for and a reinforcing bar locking the rearward portions of said share section and said plow share.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MATTHEW MAKES.
