SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,594, dated July 29, 1884.

To all w/wm it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WENDELIN SENG, a citiin the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SpringLatches, of which the following is a specification, to wit:

This inventionrelates to an improvement in spring-latches; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In order to enable others skilled in the art use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is abottom perspective View of the seat and arms of achilds chair having a hinged lap-board attached and secured by my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of parts of my latch. i

A represents the seat, and B the bent arms, ofa childs chair, which is provided with a small table or lap-board, C, hinged to one of the chair-arms in such manne" as to swing horizontally in the usual way. To the under side of this table 0, at the end opposite the pivotal point, is secured a latch, formed as follows:

D represents a box or casting, having an open slot, (1, in its forward end, and a hole, (1, in its rear end, as seen fully in Fig. 2.

E represents the latclrbolt, which is bent at right angles to its main portion at the rear end, as seen at 6, thus forming a handle. Near its forward end this bolt is formed with a flange or shoulder, e, on the forward side of which is east the beveled nose e. Around the main portion of the latch is coiled a spiral spring, E. It will be observed that the nose 6 is east or formed upon one side of the flange or shoulder, and is thus thrown away from the table, to which the latch is secured. This enables the recess formed in the chair for the engagement of the latch to be made far enough from the edge to obviate all danger of breaking out under strain, and saves the necessity of placing a metal keeper on the wood, as is usually done. The rear end of the bolt being of the same size and simply bent to form a'handie, it is possible to cast the latch in one piece,

and readily slip the spring in place when put ting it together.

It is obvious that the direction of the bevel on the nose 6 may be changed at pleasure and the latch-bolt may be removed and turned over, if desired.

NVhile the device is especially intended for use with the hinged tables of childrens chairs, it is evident that it may be used for many other purposes without material change.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a spring latch, the box or easing D, formedgwith an open slot, (1, in one end, and a hole d, in the other, in combination with the latch-bolt E, having its rear end bent, and formed of the same size as its main portion, and its forward end provided with the shoulder e and beveled nose 0 upon one side of the same, and the spring E, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
