Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. WITHERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Fountain-Brush, of which the follow-. ing is a specification.

This invention relates to fountain-brushes, the same being designed for use in marking bales, boxes, and all kinds of packages, as well as in applying stove-polish, blacking, or shoe-polish, paints, whitewash, &c.

The object of the present invention is to provide, in connection with a distributingbrush, a liquid-containing reservoir having communication with the bristles of the brush, and a novel form of gate or slide for regulating the flow of material to the brush, the whole being constructed so as to be separable for the purpose of disassociating the several parts thereof for cleaning.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of the subjoined description.

The invention consists in an improved fountain-brusl1 embodying certain'novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustratedin the drawings, and finally incorporated in the claims hereto appended.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fountain-brush constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view of the reservoir with the brush removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the brush, showing the feedopenings in the back thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the gate or slide.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a hollow body forming the reservoir of the improved fountain-brush, the said reservoir being provided with a nozzle 2, through which the liquid may be introduced, said nozzle being closed by a screw-cap 3 or in other convenient manner. which is adapted to partially surround and within which is received the back 6 of the distributing-brush. The reservoir is provided with a bottom 7 and is further provided with a false bottom 8, and between these two bottoms is arranged a gate or slide 9, formed, preferably, of metal and of ashape correspondingsomewhat to the shape of the bottom of the reservoir. This gate or slide is provided at one end with a strap extension 11, terminating in a finger-loop 12, in which the 'operators finger may be inserted for re-' ciprocating the slide, and the gate or slide is also faced upon one or both sides with felt 13 or other soft flexible packing material, whereby a close contact and joint is formed between the said gate or slide and the bottom and false. bottom of the reservoir.

- The bottom of the reservoir, the false bottom, the gate or slide, and the back 6 of the brush are all formed with alining openings 14:, through which the material within the reservoir is fed to the bristles of the brush. However, as the gate or slide 9 may be reciprocated, its feed-openings may be moved out of alin ement with the other feed-openings in the bottom of the reservoir and the back of the brush, thus cutting off the flow of material to the brush, while the felt or packing upon each side of the gate serves to prevent any leakage.

By the construction described it will be seen that the flow of material to the brush may be easily regulated or cut off, that provision is made for guarding against any leakage of such material when the brush is not in use, and that the brush and the gate or slide may be readily removed for the purpose of cleaning the same.
