Description

PATENTED DEC. 31, 1907.
R. L. SHORT.
FOUNTAIN BRUSH.
APPLICATION TILED MAYE, 1906.
ROBERT L. SHORT, OF FOSTORIA, OHIO.
FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
Application filed May 5, 1906. Serial N 315,446.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. SHORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to fountain brushes, and is designed for use in connection with liquid paints, cements, etc., and consists of a brush and brush holder designed to be attached to a receiver for the liquid, which may be the original package containing the liquid, or one adapted to be filled from such original package the object of the invention being to provide a brush that may be readily attached or detached from the liquid receiver and to operate automatically in controlling the flow of liquid from the receiver to the brush during the operation of spreading said liquid. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a liquid rei i under pressure applied thereto.
ceiver and brush attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the brush and its mountings. Fig. 1 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3, having the brush in a spreading position and the liquid controlling valve partially open.
Like reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views.
A re resents a receiver for the liquid and also a handle for the brush; B is a detachable neck piece adapted to be secured to the receiver by means of its screw threaded portion; D is a brush back removably attached to a flap valve E mounted upon springs f and extending across the inclined mouth C of the neck portion B. The springs f extend upward and are provided with coils G for the purpose of increasing the resiliency thereof, and are secured to the neck by means of clips near the coils and at their upper ends, as shown at h; their lower ends being secured to the laterally projecting and downwardly turned edges of the valve and curved in a manner to form gages j, limiting the effective action of the brush portion J secured to the back D. M V
In operation pressure upon the gage ends 3' of the springs f that form a part of and are secured to the outer edges of the valve in a manner to contact with the surface being operated upon will open the "flap valve E outward from the reservoir and allow liquid to flow to the brush J, and by manipulating the device in this manner the brush will be supplied with liquid automatically, and as soon as the pressure is released from the springs the valve immediately closes and prevents further flow of liquid.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to cover by Letters Patent, is:
1. A fountain brush comprising, in combination, a receiver provided with an outlet, a flap-valve adapted to control said. outlet, a brush mounted upon said valve, a portion of said valve adapted to contact with the surface operated upon and to open said valve outward from said receiver under pressure applied thereto.
2. A fountain brush comprising, in combination, a receiver provided with an outlet, a flap-valve yieldingly held in position to control said outlet, a brush mounted upon said valve, a portion of said valve adapted to contact with the surface operated upon and to open said valve outward from said receiver 3. A fountain brush comprising, in combination, a receiver provided with an outlet, a flap-valve pivotally mounted upon said receiver and adapted to close said outlet when moved in one direction, a spring operative to hold said valve in its closing position, a brush mounted upon said valve, a portion of said valve adapted to contact with the surface operated upon and to open said valve outward from said receiver under pressure applied thereto.
4. A fountain brush comprising, in combi nation, a receiver provided with an outlet, a detachable neck forming a conduit for the liquid and having one end connecting with said outlet and its opposite end provided with an opening, a flap-valve operative to control said opening, a brush carried by said valve, a portion of said valve adapted to contact with the surface operated upon and to open said valve outward from said opening under pressure applied thereto.
In witness whereof, I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT L. SHORT.
