A TTIVEEH' UNITED STATES ATENT tries.
WALTER H. UNDERlVOOD, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
' COMBINED MUCILAGE. RECEPTACLE AND BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373.701, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed January 20, 1887. Serial No. 2:24.853.
To asZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. UNDER- WOQD, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mncilage Receptacle and Brush, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved receptacle for holding mucilage, which receptacle is provided with a brush or rubber tip that is an equivalent for the brush, and which is to be used for applying the mucilage direct from the receptacle.
The invention consists of a receptacle made of metal, glass, or other material, of increasing diameter from both ends to a point between the ends, one end of the receptacle being closed by a soft-rubber cap and the other end by a soft-rubber tip, al'love which an aperture is provided, from which the mncilage can flow out of the receptacle and upon the tip and flow down the same to the paper. The said aperture can be closed by a rubber sleeve, all as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved combined mucilage receptacle and brush in an upright position, the outlet-aperture being open. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same tilted as in use, the outlet-aperture being closed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The receptacle A is made of sheet metal, glass, porcelain, or other material, and is tapered from the two ends to a point between the ends, as shown at A and A, the taper A being longer than the taper A At the ends of the tapered portions A A the necks B and B are provided, of which the former has the greater diameter. A soit-rubber cap, 0, preferably hemispherical, is held upon the neck B, and a soft-rubber tapering tip, D, having an elastic flange, i), is held by said flange in the neck B Directly above the top of the flange D the aperture F is provided in the side of the neck B which aperture has approximately the size of a pinhole and serves (No model.)
to permit the mucilage to pass from the receptacle A out upon the outside of the tapered tip D; or a slit may beprovided in place of the pin-hole. A soft-rubber sleeve or band, G, on the flange D and neck B serves to close said aperture F when the mncilage is not to be used.
\Vhen the mucilage is to be used, the aperture. mustbe opened by sliding down the sleeve or cover G. The receptacle A is held in upright position and the cap O pressed inward so as to produce a pressure upon the surface of mucilage, wherebyasmall quantity of the mucilage is forced out of the aperture F, flows down the tip D, and onto the paper, 850., over which the tip is drawn. \Vhen the flow of mucilage is to cease, the pressure is removed from the cap 0. \Vhen the appara tus is not to be used, it is rested on its side and assumes the position shown in Fig. 2, the end having the collar B. being weighted, so that when the receptacle is not held in upright position the weighted endthat is, the one provided with a collar, B--will rest on the table or support on which the receptacle is placed. The mucilage thus flows from the tip end to the opposite end of the receptacle, and cannot pass out through the aperture, as shown in Fig. 2. In place of providing the aperture closed by the rubber-cap O, the same can be provided in one side, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The brushtip may metal, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a receptacle increasing in diameter from its ends to a point between the ends, of a neck at one end of the receptacle, an aperture in the side of said neck, and a rubber tip on said neck, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a receptacle in creasing in diameter from its ends to a point between the ends, ofa neck on said receptacle, which neck has an aperture, and arubber tip in said neck, the receptacle being provided with another aperture closed by a flexible cap, substantially as herein shown and described.
be'niade of flexible sheet 8. A receptacle increasing in diameter from its ends to a point between the ends, one end In testimony that I claim the foregoing as of the receptacle being weighted more than 1 my invention I have signed my namein pres- IO the other, the receptacle being provided with ence of two subscribing witnesses.
an aperture and a tapered tip on the end op- 5 posite the one that is weighted, said receptacle WALTER H. UNDERWOOD.
being also provided with an additional aper- WVitnesses: ture which is closed by a rubber cap, substan- OSCAR F. GUNZ, tially as shown and described. MARTIN PETRY.
