Be it known that 1, JOHN WV. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dainpening-Machines,
a description of which will be found in the the following specification and is particu larly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings furnished herewith Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in central longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper reservoir. Fig. 3 is a front view of the device with a portion of the lower reservoir broken out to illustrate certain portions, which would otherwisebe hidden from view.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section through the upper end thereof. Fig. 5 is a section taken through both of the dampening rollers showing their construction.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a reservoir upon which is supported a post B, carrying on its upper end an upper reservoir C. The lower reservoir is provided with a sleeve R to which the post is secured by means of the set screw m. The upper reservoir C is likewise provided with a sleeve Q. and a set-screw for clamping the post in place. The lower reservoir A is closed by a cover D, whichis formed with an opening near one end, through which pro ects a dampening roller E. This roller is journaled upon a pin I) mounted in cars a of a bracket secured to the underside of the cover D, said pin extending through said ears and having screw-threaded engagement with one of them. i
A second dampening roller F is journaled upon an. oscillating arm G, pivoted to the post B at f. This second roller F is located immediately above the roller 1*] and is secured in place upon its spindle by means of a nut 0. Both of the rollers E and F are composed of a felt body which is clamped between side plates 0, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.

Thewveight of the parts is suilicient to hold the roller F in contact with the roller E, but in addition thereto, I have provided a'spring H, one endof which is secured to the post B, and the other end bears downwardly upon a nut c threaded upon a red I, the lower end of which rod has guiding engagement with a vertical guide-aperture in the arm G. A nut d, having screw-threaded engagement with the rod, limits the downward movement thereof. The upper end of the rod I extends into the reservoir G through a sleeve J which is fixed to the bottom of the reservoir and extends upwardly to'a point near the upper end thereof. Into the bottom of the upper reservoir C is secured the body of a valve 0, the lower end of which is formed with a drip-cock-P.
The valve body and dripcock are located immediately above the upper dampening roller F,'so that any water-passing therethrough from the upper reservoir will flow upon said roller. The valve proper islettered h and is providedwith a packing or washer seated upon the valve seat at the upper end of the tubular. valve body 9.
Said valve k is carried by a valve-stem L,
guided in the valve body and extending above the same. A perforated hood N is secured upon the upper. end of the valve body and a spring -M is confined between the upper end of said hood and the valve h and operates to normally hold said valve down upon its seat. Fixed to the upper end of the extension of the valve-stem L is a plate K which is vertically adjust-able and held in place thereupon between thumb nuts 9 screw-threaded on said extension stem. One end of said plate K extends laterally through an opening in the front wall of the reservoir and the other end lies immediately above the rod 1. Upward movement of the stem I acts to raise the valvestem and open the valve 0. The upper reservoir is closed be operated-upon is then passed between the rollers .E and F, care being takento pass the folding line between the rollers. Whenever the rollers are separated, as they are when a collar is passed between them, the valve h, is: opened, permitting water from the reservoir to flow through the perforations in the hood N and out through the drip-cock P on to the upper roller F. The amount of fiow is regulated by the thickness of the collar operated upon, a thicker collar actingto raise the roller F more than a thin collar, and in consequence the valve h is raised farther from its seat.
As soon as the collar has been withdrawn, the upper roller falls upon the lower roller 'by its own gavity and by the assistance of the spring H, and the plate K is released,
- the spring M immediately reseating the valve h, and shutting off the supply of water.
I realize that various alterations and modifications of my invention are possible and do not therefore desire to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a dampening machine, the combination with a reservoir and drip-cock opening into the same, a valve for said drip-cock, a
.valve-stem and, a striking plate upon said valve-stem, of a movable dampening roller,
a support for said roller and a rod connected to said support and adapted to strike the striking plate when said dampening roller is moved from its position of rest.
2. In a dampening machine, two vertically separable rollers, a swinging arm on which the upper roller is mounted, a reservoir above said rollers, a dripping device depending from said reservoir through which water passes from the reservoir to one of said rollers, a valve in said dripping device provided with a stem extending upwardly into the reservoir, a rod extending upwardly from said swinging arm into the reservolr and operative connections between the upper 40 ends or" said rod and stem.
