To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ALEXANDER MoAviTY, of the city of St. John, in the Province of New Brunswick, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Tater-Closets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates particularly to automatically flushing water closets, and it has for its object to provide means whereby the closet seat is hinged, and after having been lowered to position and when released is automatically raised and the closet is simultaneously flushed, while such means is also adapted to allow the closet to be flushed at will independently of the raising of the seat. For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a water closet provided with my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the underside of one of the weighted hinge-levers by which the seat of the closet is automatically raised and the closet flushing means is automatically actuated; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the said lever; and Figs. 4. and 5 are front and side elevations of the means through the medium of which the closet is automatically or manually flushed.
The invention may be said briefly to consist of a lever fulcrumed between its ends to the frame of the water closet and having one end rigidly connected to the seat and its other end weighted sufficiently to overcome the seat and yieldingly retain the same in its raised position, while valvular gear, opera tively connected to closet flushing mechanism, has a portion thereof located in the path of and actuated by the lever, and another part of such mechanism is adapted to be manually actuated for the purpose of enabling the closet to be flushed at will independently of the seat action.
The tank I), flush pipe 0, valve (1 together with the lever e the rod f connecting the same to the valve, and the rod 9 connecting such lever to my improved automatic mechanism, are of usual construction, and the same can be said of the bowl 7L, and seat i of the closet.
I provide a pair of levers fulcrumed between their ends as at k, one end of each being rigidly connected as at m to the seat and the opposite ends thereof being weighted preferably as at n. One of these levers is formed with a laterally projecting finger or stub spindle 0 having a roller p mounted upon the end thereof. This finger is disposed in such a position relatively to the fulcrum point of its carrying lever, as to cause the roller to have sufiicient movement, and in the right direction, to depress a part of and actuate improved valvular mechanism whereby the flush pipe is opened and the closet automatically flushed. This improved mechanism consists of a spindle r rotatably mounted in a bearing bracket 8 secured upon the under side of the tank, a downwardly curved arm t is adjustably fastened by a set screw u in a bracket 4) carried upon the spindle r and secured rigidly thereto in any desired angular position by a set-screw w. A gravity pawl .m is pivoted as at y between its ends to the free end, 2, of the curved arm 15 which is forked to accommodate it. This arm is adjusted to a position with the projecting end of the pawl located in the path of the roller p as it moves downwardly when the seat is raised.
A second arm 2 is mounted rigidly upon the spindle r and it has a T-bracket 3 pivotally connected to the end thereof, the rod g, before mentioned, connecting one arm of such bracket to the lever e of the flushing mechanism within the tank I), while a short rod 5 is connected to the other arm of the bracket 8 and is located slidably in a sleevelike guiding bracket 6, secured to the front of the tank, the latter rod having a button 7 upon its upper end. This last mentioned means enables the flushing mechanism to be actuated independently of the seat.
Operation: The operation of my improved mechanism for automatically raising the seat and simultaneously flushing the closet, and for enabling the closet to be flushed at will independently of the seat action, is as follows: The weighted ends n of the hinge-levers yieldingly retain the seat in its raised position against the front of the tank, and such seat can be lowered Without flushing the closet, the gravity pawl x yielding upwardly when the roller 19 comes into contact therewith. Upon the seat being released, after having been lowered, the weighted levers will raise it automatically, and simultaneously the roller p will bear upon the pawl and as the projecting end of the latter is retained against downward move-= ment in its supporting arm 1,, the roller 7 will, through such pawl, depress the arm t thereby rotating the spindle r and through arm 2 the rod 9 and the lever e raise the valve d and flush the closet. The closet can be flushed at will without the movement of the seat by depressing the rod 5 thereby lowering the bracket 3 and drawing down the rod g, thus operating the flushing mechanism and flushing the closet. This can be done independently of the seat and whether the latter is up or down.
If desired the, precise construction and arrangement of the parts of my improved mechanism may be changed or other flushing mechanism proper, or tank, may be used, or other changes in detail made, without departing from the spirit of my invention. lVhat I claim is as follows:
1. The combination with a water closet comprising a bowl, a seat, a tank for containing water with which to'flush the closet, a flush pipe leading from the tank to the bowl and valvular mechanism for controlling such i e of a hinge-lever pivotally connected to the top of the bowl and having one end rigidly secured to the'seat and its opposite end weighted and provided with a laterally projecting member, means operatively connected, to the valvular mechanism and constructed and arranged to have a portion thereof intersect the path of'the said member.
2. The combination with a water closet comprising abowl, a seat, a low tank adjacent to the seat, a flush pipe leading from the tank to the bowl and valvular mechanism for controlling such pipe, of a hinge-lever pivotally connected to the top of the bowl, and having one end rigidly secured to the seat and its opposite end weighted and provided with a laterally projecting member, means operatively connected to the valvular mechanism and constructed and arranged to have a portion thereof intersect the path of the said member.
3. The combination with a water-closet seat, means whereby the same is automatically raised and flushing mechanism of a pair of lever arms having a common pivot point, means operatively connecting such lever arms together to move in unison, a device carried by one of the said lever arms and adapted to efiect a connection between the seat and the last mentioned lever arms uponv the movement of the seat in one direction only, and means operatively connecting the other arm to the flushing mechanism.
4. The combination with the seat of a water-closet and flushing mechanism including valvular mechanism, of a weighted hinge lever pivotally connected to the bowl and adapted to automatically raise the seat and yieldingly retain the same in its raised position, a pair of lever arms having a common pivot point upon a stationary part of the water closet, means operatively connecting the lever arms together to move in unison one of such arms being adjustable towards and from the other, a pawl carried by one of such arms in position to intersect the pathof the hinge lever, such pawl being constructed to yield in one direction, and means preventingthe yielding of such pawl in the opposite direction, and means operatively connecting the other arm to the valvular mechanism.
5. The combination with a water-closet comprising a bowl, a seat, a tank, a flush pipe leading from the tank to the bowl and valvular mechanism for controlling such pipe, of a weighted hinge lever pivotally connected to the bowl and adapted to automatically raise the seat and yieldingly retain the same in its raised position, a pair of lever arms having a common pivot point upon a stationary part of the water closet, means operatively connecting such lever arms together to move in unison, a pawl carried by one of the same in its raised position, a pair of lever arms having a common pivot point upon a stationary part of the water closet, one of such arms being adjustable towards or from the other arm and to different angular positions relatively thereto, a pawl carried by one of such arms in position to intersect the path, of the hinge lever, such pawl being constructed to yield in one direction, and means preventing the yielding of such pawl in the opposite direction, and means operatively connecting the other arm to the valvular mechanism.
7. The combination with a water-closet comprising a bowl, a seat, a tank, a flush pipe leading from the tank to the bowl and valvular mechanism for controlling such pipe, of a weighted hinge lever pivotally connected to the bowl and adapted to automatically raise the seat and yieldingly retain the same in its raised position, a pair of lever arms having a common pivot point upon a stationary part of the water closet, means operatively connecting such lever arms together to move in unison, a gravity pawl carried by one of such arms in position to intersect the path of the hinge lever, and means operatively connecting the other arm to the valvular mechanism.
8. The combination with a water-closet comprising a bowl, a seat, a tank, a flush pipe leading from the tank to the bowl and valv ular mechanism for controlling such pipe, of a weighted hinge lever pivotally connected to the bowl and adapted to automatically raise the seat and yieldingly retain the same in its raised position, a pair of lever arms having a common pivot point upon a stationary part of the water closet, one of such arms being adjustable towards or from the other arm and to different angular positions relatively thereto, a gravity pawl carried by one of such arms in position to intersect the path of the hinge lever, and means operatively connecting the other arm to the valv ular mechanism.
9. The combination with a water-closet comprising a bowl, a seat, a tank, a flush pipe leading from the tank to the bowl and valvular mechanism for controlling such pipe, of a weighted hinge lever pivotally connected to the bowl and adapted to automatically raise the seat and yieldingly retain the same in its raised position, a pair of lever arms having a common pivot point upon a stationary part of the water closet, means operatively connecting such lever arms together to move in unison, a pawl carried by one of such arms in position to intersect the path of the hinge lever, such pawl being constructed to yield in one direction, and means preventing the yielding of such pawl in the opposite direction, means operatively con necting the other arm to the valvular mechanism, a short vertical rod connected at its lower end to the last mentioned arm and having a button on the top thereof.
