This -invention relates to toilet seats and more particularly to a cover for a toilet seat.

An object of this invention is to provide in a structure of this kind means whereby the cover of the toilet may be raised by the weight of the person and the cover maintained in upraised position by weight placed on an operating member disposed forwardly of the seat.

Another object of this invention is to provide in a structure of this kind means whereby a relatively small movement of the cover operating member will eectively swing the cover through an arc of substantially so as to raise the cover from a horizontal position to a vertical position. I

The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:-

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device constructed according to the embodiment of this invention.

Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing the cover in closed position.

Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2 of the lid in open position.

Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral I9 designates generally a platform having a front wall I I secured thereto and a floor I2 extending forwardly of the front wall II. A toilet seat structure, generally designated as I4, is mounted on the platform I Il and a lid or'cover I5 engages the seat structure I 9.

In order to provide means whereby the lid I5 may be raised and held in raised position, I have provided a crank I 9 which, in the present instance, is integral with the pintle I3 of the lid I5 and the pintle I3 is journaled in bearings Il disposed one on each side of the inner end of the lid I5. The pintle is xed relative to the lid I5 so that turning of the pintle will also swing the lid. A spring I8 is disposed about the extended end of the pintle I3 and has one end thereof secured to or engaging against the adjacent bearing I'I and the opposite end of the spring I8, as shown in Fig. l, engages the crank arm or lever I6 so as to constantly urge the crank arm I6 and the lid I5 to closed position.

A treadle, generally designated as I9, is hingedly secured to a plate 29 by means of a pintle 1934,'seria1 No. `747,541 (ol. 4 251) 2I.` The rear or inner end provided with an upturned flange 22 and an armv 23 is secured beneath the treadle I9 and extends r inwardly thereof.

A lever 24 has one end thereof pivotally secured to the oor I2 as by bearing means 25 in the form of a pair of L-shaped angle bars and the opposite end of the lever 24 is free and extends parallel with the vertical wall II.

A flexible member 26 has one end thereof secured to the free end of the lever 24 and this flexible member extends vertically from the free end of the lever 24 and enters a horizontally disposed opening ZI provided in one side of the seat structure I4. A pulley 28 carried by a flanged U-shaped member 29 is mounted in the forward `portion of the seat structure I4 so that the flexible member 26 may be trained over this pulley 28 and loosely moved through the opening 21. The rear or other end of .the flexible member 26 is secured to the crank lever I6 so that when the pedal I9 is depressed, the crank I6 will be rocked and the seat cover I5 raised. The arm 23 is pivotally connected to the lever 24 at a point adjacent the inner or pivoted end of the lever 24 so that a slight movement vertically of the treadle I9 will cause a movement at the free end of the lever 24 suiicient to swing the cover I5 from a substantially horizontal position'to a vertical position.

In the use of the device herein disclosed, when a weight such as a foot or the like is placed on the treadle I9, this treadle is depressed and a vertical movement in a downward direction is transmitted to the lever 24, thereby pulling the flexible member 26 downwardly and rocking the crank I 6 downwardly against the tension of the spring I3 and raising the cover I5. When the person steps off of the treadle I9 or removes the weight, the spring I8 will act to lower the cover I 5v and at the same time will raise the treadle I9 to an inoperative position by a personwhereby depressing of the treadle I9 will cause the cover I5 to be lowered.

It will also be apparent from the foregoing that the cover operating means may readily be used with closet structures at present available and I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the specific structure of a seat or closet shown.

What is claimed isz- 1. A sanitary device as set forth, comprising a seat having a horizontally disposed opening therethrough, a cover hinged to said seat, a treadle member rockably mounted forwardly and downwardly of the seat, a rock arm fixed relaof meneame :91sy

2 tive to the cover, a rock leverrdisposed adjacent the free end of the treadle, means connecting the lever with the treadle, and a flexible member extending through said opening and 4connecting the free end of the lever with the rock arm to raise the cover coactive with the depression of the treadle.

A sanitary device as set forth, comprising a seat, a cover for the` seat, hinge means including a crank arm for rockably mounting the cover on the seat, a spring constantly urging the cover to closed position, a pivoted treadle disposed forwardly and downwardly of the seat,'a lever having an end thereof rockably mounted adjacent the free end of the treadle, pivotal means connecting the inner end of the treadle with the lever at a point of the lever, and a flexible member connected at one end to the free end of the lever and at the other end to the crank arm whereby to raise the cover upon depression of the treadle 'against the tension of the spring.
