7 Claims. (01. 4251) This invention relates to toilet cover and seat lines the position of the device when the seat and lifts and, more particularly, to such a device in cover are both opened.
which the cover of a toilet may be lifted inde- Figure 3 is a perspective View of the device pendently of the seat by a person without the mounted on a toilet showing both the seat and use of his hands. cover in a closed position.
In the past such devices have operated to The apparatus of the present invention co-nraise both the seat and cover of a toilet at one sists of a foot lever II] on one end of which is and the same time or if the cover was to be fastened er fOOt pedal raised independently of the seat the same would The said foot lever I0 is pivotally mounted in have to be raised by means of a persons hands. a fastening Which fastening y be secured 10 An object of my invention is to provide a device to the side of the toilet bowl l3, as shown in the by which a person may raise the cover and the drawing, y b mounted o the 1 00 All a seat of a toilet by means of his foot but which p nt n ar t e f t p dal II s a t da device will raise the cover independently of the U device Which is adapted to be connected seat. with the foot pedal lever l0 preferably at a point 15 Another object of my invention is to provide a near e t pedal I Th s co o d v ce my device of this character which may be easily and e in the f O an hydraulic Controlled neatly attached to the cover and seat of a toilet. plunger or may consist of a sp the function A further object of this invention is to provide of said device being to retard the closing of the an apparatus for raising or lowering the cover toilet seat and cover. This device may also be 20 and seat of a toilet by means of foot pressure in attached to the side of the toilet bowl l3 or to the which the operator will not have totouch either the cover or seat of a toilet with his hands in e pposite end of the foot pedal ever I9, to order to raise the cover independently of the which the f pedal H s a d. s p t y t; connected at l5 to one end of the connecting rod Other object will appear or ill b b i u Hi. The other end of the connecting rod [6 is from a consideration of the detailed description pivotally mfiuhiled On a level At a point i which follows taken in conjunction with the mediate s length, the ev I? is pivotally accompanying drawing mounted at 18 to a fastening l9 which fastening The apparatus of the present invention conis secured preferably to the under side of toilet 30 sists of a foot lever pivoted near the base of a seat 20 at a point Closely ace t he eal and toilet said foot lever being pivotally connected to the side of said toilet a t on d of a i 1ever hi h is pivotally The lever I7 is so formed that it has an arm mounted intermediate its length on the toilet seat 2| formed integrally e w t wh ch arm is at one side and near the rear of said seat. The OiTSet 50 that the end 22 to Which the C c g 35 opposite end of the main link is pivotally conrod is pivotally mounted s ht y f TWaId nected to one end of a lever the opposite end of of the pivot point The pp s end 3 of the which is pivotally mounted on the toilet Cover lever l1 extends slightly above the toilet cover 24 said mounting being slightly forward of t and is pivotally connected at 25 to a cover lever 4 mounting on the toilet seat. The toilet seat and The Cover lever 25 is pivotally mounted at cover are hinged to the bowl of the toilet in the 27 on a fastening 28 Which is secured p rably usual manner to the underside of the toilet cover 24 at a point It will be understood ,however, that the invenshghtly W of the pivot m tion is not restricted to the exact disclosure, but The toflet seat 29 and the tollet cover 24 are 4., is susceptible to such changes and modification hinged to the toilet bowl IS in the usual manner which are within the scope and purview of the ig zi g f j g g' g usual wate" tank for appended claims.
L When it is desired to use the a aratus of th F acc ompanyn lg drawmg present invention the operator grasses his foot 5 Figure 1 1S a slde View Showmg the apparatus downwardly on the foot pedal II. This downso of the present invention mounted on a toilet, the Ward pressure on th foot pedal H causes the seat and Cover be in C e position foot lever ID to pivot in the fastening 52 which Figure 2 is a VieW s ar to Figure 1 showing raises the opposite end of the said foot lever. in full lines the position of the apparatus when This action moves the connecting rod l6 upthe cover is opened and showing in dot and dash Wardly and forwardly through its pivotal con- 66 nection with the foot lever ID at l5 and its pivotal connection with offset arm 2| of the lever I! at 22. This downward pressure on the foot pedal I I causes the lever I! to pivot on the fastening i9 at l8 due to the fact that the arm 2| is offset forwardly of the pivot point l8. The end 23 of the lever I1 is swung backwardly toward the water tank 30 of the toilet.
In moving backwardly and downwardly the lever l1 moves the arm 26 backwardly which initiates the upward movement of the toilet cover 24 which pivots on the hinge 29, due to the fact that the pivot point 21 between the lever 25 and fastening 28 is forward of the pivot point l8 between the fastening I9 and lever II.
The pivot point 25 moves in an arc of which the pivot 18 on the fastening I1 is the center.
The cover lever 26, since it is pivotally connected to the lever H at 25 follows the pivot point 25 as it moves through said are, the lever 26 pivoting about the pivot point 25 on the lever I1 and the pivot 21 fastened on the toilet cover 24. This action swings the toilet cover open, the apparatus assuming the position shown in full lines in Figure 2, the cover 24 coming to rest against the water tank 30.
When it is desired to raise the toilet seat, further downward pressure is exerted by the operator on the foot pedal ll. Since the toilet cover 24 is fully opened and resting against the back of the water tank 30 no further movement can be imparted thereto, therefore, as the foot lever l0 moves upwardly further, the connecting rod l6 imparts an upward movement to the lever I! through its pivotal connection at 22 with the arm The arm I! then pivots on the pivot connection 25 between the lever l1 and the lever 26 which raises the toilet seat.
As the toilet seat raises, the lever 26 swings backwardly on the pivot 21 of the toilet cover fastening 28 until the toilet seat comes to rest in its fully opened position against the toilet cover 24 which is at rest against the water tank 30.
The position of the apparatus, when the toilet seat and the toilet cover are fully opened, is
' shown in dot and dash lines in Figure 2.
When it is desired to close the toilet seat 20, the operator initiates the downward movement of the same by pressing his foot momentarily on the part of the foot pedal l i nearest the fastening I2 and then removing his foot from the same. This in turn will impart a downward movement to the connecting rod l6 which will draw the arm 2| of the lever I1 downwardly about the pivot point I8. The end 23 of the lever I1 is given a slight upward movement which imparts a forward movement to the seat 20 through the action of the said end 23 on the cover lever 26 which is pivotally mounted on the cover 24. The seat 20 will move downwardly independently of the cover 24 due to the greater weight of the seat 20. The seat 20 moves downwardly in an arc of which the hinge 29 is the center, the cover lever 26 moving forwardly in an arc of which the pivot point 21 is the center.
The foot pedal control device l4 which, as shown in the drawing, consists of a pull-spring, will retard the closing movement of the seat 20 since the end of the foot pedal lever H] to which the foot pedal is attached moves upwardly against the tension of the spring as the toilet seat is closed.
After the toilet seat 20 has been closed leaving the toilet cover 24 remaining in an open position, and it is desired to close said'cover, or should the toilet cover only have been raised and it is desired to close the same, the operator initiates the downward movement of the same by pressing his foot momentarily on the part of the foot pedal l l nearest the fastening l2 and then removing his foot from the same. This action will impart a downward movement to the opposite end of the foot pedal lever l0 which will draw the connecting rod l6 downwardly imparting a downward movement about pivot [8 to the arm 2| of the lever I! on the toilet seat fastening l9. This will cause the end 23 of the lever l1 to move in an arc of which the pivot I8 is the center. Such a movement will, in turn, impart a forward movement to the toilet cover 24 through the pivotal connection 25 between the lever I! and the lever 26 and the pivotal connection 2'! between the lever 26 and the toilet cover fastening 28.
The foot pedal control device [4 will act to retard the closing of the toilet cover inthe same manner as it retards the closing of the toilet seat as previously described.
It may be readily understood that the present invention may be adapted in different ways to accomplish the purposes set forth and it is not my intention to limit the invention to the exact details of construction shown and described but rather to cover all equivalent structures as defined by the scope of the following claims.
