This downward pressure on the foot pedal I I causes the lever I! to pivot on the fastening i9 at l8 due to the fact that the arm 2| is offset forwardly of the pivot point l8. The end 23 of the lever I1 is swung backwardly toward the water tank 30 of the toilet.
In moving backwardly and downwardly the lever l1 moves the arm 26 backwardly which initiates the upward movement of the toilet cover 24 which pivots on the hinge 29, due to the fact that the pivot point 21 between the lever 25 and fastening 28 is forward of the pivot point l8 between the fastening I9 and lever II.
The pivot point 25 moves in an arc of which the pivot 18 on the fastening I1 is the center.
The cover lever 26, since it is pivotally connected to the lever H at 25 follows the pivot point 25 as it moves through said are, the lever 26 pivoting about the pivot point 25 on the lever I1 and the pivot 21 fastened on the toilet cover 24. This action swings the toilet cover open, the apparatus assuming the position shown in full lines in Figure 2, the cover 24 coming to rest against the water tank 30.
When it is desired to raise the toilet seat, further downward pressure is exerted by the operator on the foot pedal ll. Since the toilet cover 24 is fully opened and resting against the back of the water tank 30 no further movement can be imparted thereto, therefore, as the foot lever l0 moves upwardly further, the connecting rod l6 imparts an upward movement to the lever I! through its pivotal connection at 22 with the arm The arm I! then pivots on the pivot connection 25 between the lever l1 and the lever 26 which raises the toilet seat.
As the toilet seat raises, the lever 26 swings backwardly on the pivot 21 of the toilet cover fastening 28 until the toilet seat comes to rest in its fully opened position against the toilet cover 24 which is at rest against the water tank 30.
The position of the apparatus, when the toilet seat and the toilet cover are fully opened, is
' shown in dot and dash lines in Figure 2.
When it is desired to close the toilet seat 20, the operator initiates the downward movement of the same by pressing his foot momentarily on the part of the foot pedal l i nearest the fastening I2 and then removing his foot from the same. This in turn will impart a downward movement to the connecting rod l6 which will draw the arm 2| of the lever I1 downwardly about the pivot point I8. The end 23 of the lever I1 is given a slight upward movement which imparts a forward movement to the seat 20 through the action of the said end 23 on the cover lever 26 which is pivotally mounted on the cover 24. The seat 20 will move downwardly independently of the cover 24 due to the greater weight of the seat 20. The seat 20 moves downwardly in an arc of which the hinge 29 is the center, the cover lever 26 moving forwardly in an arc of which the pivot point 21 is the center.
The foot pedal control device l4 which, as shown in the drawing, consists of a pull-spring, will retard the closing movement of the seat 20 since the end of the foot pedal lever H] to which the foot pedal is attached moves upwardly against the tension of the spring as the toilet seat is closed.
After the toilet seat 20 has been closed leaving the toilet cover 24 remaining in an open position, and it is desired to close said'cover, or should the toilet cover only have been raised and it is desired to close the same, the operator initiates the downward movement of the same by pressing his foot momentarily on the part of the foot pedal l l nearest the fastening l2 and then removing his foot from the same. This action will impart a downward movement to the opposite end of the foot pedal lever l0 which will draw the connecting rod l6 downwardly imparting a downward movement about pivot [8 to the arm 2| of the lever I! on the toilet seat fastening l9. This will cause the end 23 of the lever l1 to move in an arc of which the pivot I8 is the center. Such a movement will, in turn, impart a forward movement to the toilet cover 24 through the pivotal connection 25 between the lever I! and the lever 26 and the pivotal connection 2'! between the lever 26 and the toilet cover fastening 28.
The foot pedal control device [4 will act to retard the closing of the toilet cover inthe same manner as it retards the closing of the toilet seat as previously described.
It may be readily understood that the present invention may be adapted in different ways to accomplish the purposes set forth and it is not my intention to limit the invention to the exact details of construction shown and described but rather to cover all equivalent structures as defined by the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a toilet having a seat and cover hingedly mounted thereon, means for limiting the upward movement of said seat and cover, a lever extending upwardly pivotally mounted intermediate its length on said toiletseat one end of said lever extending above said toilet seat when the same is in its closed position, a lever having one end pivotally connected to said toilet cover forward of the pivot point of said first-mentioned lever on the toilet seat and having the other end pivotally connected to the upwardly extended lever, a foot lever pivotally mounted at the base of said toilet, and a rod pivotally connected to one end of said foot lever and extending upwardly the other end of said rod being connected to said upwardly extending lever, the connection between said upwardly extending lever and said rod being forward of the pivotal connection between said rod and the foot lever.
2. In combination with a toilet having a seat and cover hingedly mounted thereon, means for limiting the upward movement of said seat and cover, a fastening mounted on said toilet seat, a lever extending upwardly pivotally mounted intermediate its length on said fastening one end of said lever extending above said toilet seat when in its closed position, the other end of said lever being offset forwardly, a fastening mounted on said toilet cover forward of said fastening on the toilet seat, a lever having one end pivotally connected to said fastening on the toilet cover and the other end pivotally connected to said upwardly extending lever, a foot lever pivotally mounted at the base of said toilet, and a rod pivotally connected to one end of said foot lever and extending upwardly the other end of said rod being pivotally connected to said offset end of said upwardly extending lever, the connection between said offset portion of said upwardly extending lever and said rod being forward of the pivotal connection between said rod and foot lever.
3. In combination with a toilet having a seat and cover hingedly mounted thereon, means for limiting the upward movement of said seat and cover, a fastening mounted on said toilet seat,
a lever extending upwardly pivotally mounted intermediate its length on said fastening one end of said lever extending above said toilet seat when in its closed position, a fastening mounted on said toilet cove-r forward of said fastening on the toilet seat, a lever having one end pivotally connected to said fastening on the toilet cover and the other end pivotally connected to said upwardly extending lever, a foot lever pivotally mounted at the base of said toilet, and a rod pivotally connected to one end of said foot lever and extending upwardly the other end of said rod being pivotally connected to said upwardly extending lever, the connection between said upwardly extending lever and said rod being forward of the pivotal connection between said rod and the foot lever.
4. In combination with a toilet having a seat and cover hingedly mounted thereon, means for limiting the upward movement of said seat and cover, a fastening mounted on said toilet seat, a lever extending upwardly pivotally mounted intermediate its length on said fastening one end of said lever extending above said toilet seat when in its closed position, the other end of said lever being offset forwardly, a fastening mounted on said toilet cover forward of said fastening on the toilet seat, a lever having one end pivotally connected to said fastening on the toilet cover and the other end pivotally connected to said upwardly extending lever, a foot lever pivotally mounted at the base of said toilet, a rod pivotally connected to one end of said foot lever and extending upwardly the other end of said rod being pivotally connected to said offset end of said upwardly extending lever, the connection between said offset portion of said upwardly extending lever and said rod being forward of pivotal connection between said rod and the foot lever, and means adapted to engage said foot lever to retard the downward movement of said toilet seat and cover.
5. In combination with a toilet having a seat and cover hingedly mounted thereon, means for limiting the upward movement of said seat and cover, a fastening mounted on said toilet seat, a lever extending upwardly pivotally mounted intermediate its length on said fastening one end of said lever extending above said toilet seat when in its closed position, the other end of said lever being offset forwardly, a fastening mounted on said toilet cover forward of said fastening on the toilet seat, a lever having one end pivotally connected to said fastening on the toilet cover and the other end pivotally connected to said upwardly extending lever, a foot lever pivotally mounted at the base of said toilet, a rod pivotally connected to one end of said foot lever and extending upwardly the other end of said rod being pivotally connected to said offset end of said upwardly extending lever, the connection between said offset portion of said upwardly extending lever and said rod being forward of pivotal connection between said rod and the foot lever and means adapted to engage said foot pedal to restore said toilet seat and cover to a closed position.
6. In combination with a. receptacle having a double cover construction, including an upper cover and a lower cover, provided with hinged mountings at one side of said receptacle, the upper cover to be lifted before the lower cover, and a linkage arrangement to raise said cover successively comprising a short link pivotally mounted at one end on said upper cover, a long link pivotally connected at an intermediate portion of its length to the lower cover, said links being pivotally connected to each other at one end and an actuator connected to the other end of the long link.
7. In combination with a receptacle having av double cover construction, including an upper cover and a lower cover, provided with hinged mountings at one side of said receptacle, the upper cover to be lifted before the lower cover, and. a linkage arrangement to raise said cover successively comprising a short link pivotally mounted at one end on said upper cover, a long link pivotally connected at an intermediate portion of its length to the lower cover, said links being pivotally connected to each other at one end and an actuator connected to the other end of the long link, said actuator including a rod and a manual actuating means connected to said rod.
