Description

PAT
' I 'SHICHIGORO' KUNQQFSUBLET, WYOMING,
COVER-LIFTING DEVICE.
Application filed. September 26, 1921. Serial No. 5031132.
To all/whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Srrromcono KUNO, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Sublet, county of Lincoln, and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover Lifting Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a. artof my application, Serial No. 503,132, led
tion to provide a device which permits the operator to raise and lower the coverby means of, his feet. Another object of my invention is to so correlate the various parts that the cover will not close with a sudden bang but will reach its lowered position gently. It is also my object to devise a "means for the purpose pointed out above, that shall be of a strong and substantial construction, neat in appearance andv which can be cheaply constructed.
In order to more clearly describe my invention, I shall have reference to the accompanying drawing in which--' a Fig. 1 shows my device attached to the cover of a watercloset stand and shows the cover in its lowered position; and
Fig. 2 shows the cover in raised position.
The same reference characters refer to the same parts in the different views.
Numeral 1 represents a toilet fixture of ordinary construction which may be rovided with an elevated tank or a low iihsh tank 2. A cover 3- is attached to the' stand in the usual manner by means of hin s 4. My improved cover lifting device, whlch I have indicated as a whole by reference numeral 5, comprises a support 6, which is adapted to be secured to the floor by means of screws or bolts (not shown) and is provided with two spaced u right members 7 between which is mounts a curved lever 8' which is connected to the upright members by means of a pivot 9. One end of lever 8 is provided with a pedal 10 which is adapted to receive pressure from the application of a persons foot for the purpose of rotating the lever about pivot 9. A second slightly curved lever 11 is pivotally attadied at 12 to one end of lever 8 and has its 11 per end connected to a plate 13 by means 0? a pivot pin 14. It is evident that with levers 8 and 11 connected to each other and pivoted to the floor and the cover in the manner pointed out, that when pedal 10 is pressed downwardly and rotates bar 8 about pivot 9, lever 11 willmove the cover 3 upwardly and turn it on its hinges 4. If I employed only levers 8 and 11, the cover 3 would fall back to its lowered position with a bang which would soon cause it to break. In order to insure a noiseless and a harmless return of cover 3, I provide lever 11 with a longitudi-. nal slot 15, within which movesa pin 16. A third slightly curved member 17 is pivotally connected to lever 8 at point 18 and the other end is slidably and pivotally connect-- ed to slot 15 by means of pin 16. It, is evident that as lever 8 is rotated about its pivot 9,: member 17 will rotate on pivot 18 and cause pin 16 to slide in slot 15. In order to provide a spring buffer action as the cover reaches its normal or lowered position, I provide two springs 19 and 20, which have their ends non-rotatably connected to, the levers. Spring 19 is bowed downwardly and spring 20 is bowed upwardly. Theactlon of the particular combination of levers and springs' shown is that as the cover appreaches its normal position, the springs exert a bufier action which prevents the cover from striking the top of the fixture with a slamming action. When the cover 1s partially elevated, the springs have very 11ttle or no effect, but as the cover approaches its upper limit, the springs offer a slight resistance which serves to start the cover moving towards its-normal position whenever pressure is removed from the pedal 10.
The, above described action is due to the fact that the springs 19 and 20 are so related to the arms 8, 11- and 17 that if. thesev are free to move, they will assume a position ofequilibrium at a point interme iate that shown in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2. A move- 19 and 20 to engage each other with considerable force an to subject them to fiexure.
This flexure acts as a cushion to prevent the cover from slamming. When the cover is raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, the
, springs are bent substantially as shown, and
this produces" a force tending to close the v cover. By having the parts so related that a hingedly connected thereto, a stationary pivot,- a lever mountedon said pivot and adapted to rock thereon, a second lever having one end pivotally connected to the cover and the other end pivotally connected to one end of the first named I lever, the other end thereof being provided with a pedal, a third lever pivotally connected to the first named lever and having a sliding connection with the second named lever, and spring means joining said third lever with each of the other two and adapted 'to modify the action of said levers.
2. In combination, a toilet fixture, a cover hingedly connected thereto, a stationary pivot, a lever mounted on said pivot and adapted to' rock thereon, a second lever having one end pivotally connected to the cover and the other end pivotally connected to one end of the first named'lever, the other end thereof being provided with a pedal, said second lever having a longitudinal slot between its ends, a third lever pivoted to the first lever and provided with a pin for slidably engagingin said slot, and spring means connecting the third lever With each of the other two levers, and adapted to modify-the action of said levers.
J 3. In combination, a'toiletfixture, a cover hingedly connected thereto, means for opening and closing said cover, said means com;
prising a stationary pivot, a curved lever ,mounted on said pivotand adapted to rock thereon, a second curved lever pivotally connected to the cover and to one end of said first named lever, said second lever having an elongated slot between its ends, a third curved-lever pivotally connected to said first lever and having means for slidably engaging in the slot of) the second member, and spring-means which serve as a buffer at the opening and closing of said cover.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
siiionreono KUNO.
