To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoGARvnY E. TATE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at- Somerset, in the county of Pulaski and State ofKentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doorchecks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to door checks, and particularly to those checks which are mounted for swinging movement upon the door jamb and with which the door contacts as it closes.
The general object of this invention is to provide a door check of this character comprising two bumpers depending freely from a bracket supported by the door jamb and normally in the path of movement of the door, these bumpers being so connected that if the door closes slowly the door will strike one of the bumpers and both bumpers will be swung gradually out of the way of the door to permit the door to close quietly,
' and if the door is forcibly closed the door will strike one of the bumpers, which will but the other bumper will remain in the path of movement of the door to still further check it. A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is very simply and cheaply constructed, which may be applied readily, and which has been found to be thoroughly effective in use.
Anotherobject is to provide a construction of this character which will permit the door to be closed slowly or forcibly closed quietly without slamming.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a door and door jamb showing my door check device thereon and in dotted lines the position taken by the check when the door is swung to gently;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the construction shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a like view to Figure 1, but showing the position taken by the parts when the door is swung to rapidly or with force;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the bracket 10.
Referring to these drawings, A designates the check. is mounted and B the door coacting with the the door jamb upon which jamb. My device includes a bracket illustrated as formed of a single piece of wire. This bracket is formed to provide a. vertical open loop 10 which is adapted to lie flat against the outer face of the door jamb, the arms of which loop are bent into a more or less horizontal plane, one of the. arms 12 extending straight outward from the door jamb, the other arm 11 extending outward and then being bent over the end of the arm 12. A screw 13 passes through the loop 10 I and holds the bracket in position.
Swingingly mounted upon the arm 12 is a link 1A. The upper end ofthis link is formed to provide a coil 15 which surrounds the arm 12 and swings thereon in a plane parallel to the face of the jamb. The length of wire which forms the straight downward from the coil 15 for a suitable distance as, for instance, two inches and is then bent forward and upward to form an eye 16. Thewire is then bent forward and downward, as at 17, and then' upward, as at 18, to formv a support for a ball 19 which is preferably of rubber and preferably solid, this rubber ball constituting a bumper or buffer.

The wire then extends downwardly and laterally in a curve and then upwardly and laterally, as at 22, this straight portion 22 supporting the relatively larger ball 23, which. is also preferably of rubber and preferably solid. v This ball 28 is relatively larger than the ball 19 but, as will be seen from Figure 2, the ball 19 is supported in advance of the ball 23, though the ball 23 extends laterally into the path of the door a slightly greater distance than the ball 19. It will be noted laterally upon the eye 16 and also swings at right anglesto the plane of movement of the link 14:. This is necessary because the bumper 23 is normally disposed infront of the junction between the door and the door amb and if this link 20 did not swing outward the'door would have diiiiculty in opening or the door would have to swing the bumper 23 laterally. With this construction, however, the door can swing the bumper 23 outward and in doing so will that the link20 swings 7 also crowd it laterally so that there is no impediment to the free opening of the door In the use of this device, the bracket is at tached to the door amb A by means of the screw 13, in such position that the bearing formed by the coil 15 is disposed just inside the edge of the jamb. Under ordinary circumstances the link 14 hangs straight downward and the ball or bumper 19 will project slightly into the path of movement of the door B and the ball 23 will also project into the path of movement of the door. If the door swings slowly toward its closed position, the free edge of the door will first strike the ball or bumper 19 and will act to swing the bumper to the left in Figure 1. If the door closes gently, the ball 19 will swing gently to the left in Figure 1 and the link 20 will swing with the link 14 so as to get the ball out of the path of movement of the door and the door will simply be checked by the bumper 19. If, however, the door is slammed to or closes rapidly under the action of a spring, the door will first strike the ball 19 and swing this ball suddenly to the left, as in Figure 3. The greater weight of the ball 23, however, will prevent this ball from swinging as rapidly to the left as the ball 19 and the inertia of the ball 23 will hold it in the path of movement of the door so that the door will first strike the ball 19 and swing this ball out of the way and will then strike the ball. 23, which will check the door. The door will slightly rebound and then swing to again and crowd the ball 23 to the left and the door will close quietly.
It will be seen that when the door swings to rapidly the joint between the links 14 and 20 will permit the upper ball 19 to; move without disturbing the posit-ion of the lower ball. The lower ball then acts as a check or bumper to the door but as the door rebounds and then moves again toward the door jamb it slowly pushes or crowds the ball 23 laterally and the door is closed. If this rebound of the door is sufiicient in amplitude to permit the ball 19 to swing back into place then, of course, when the door again moves toward its closed position after the rebound it pushes against the upper ball and pushes this ball slowly to one side and this slow action swings the lower ball out from the path of the door, permitting the door to close noiselessly.
l t will be noted that the lower bumper 23 is formed with a corrugated or roughened face so as to afford a roughened surface with which the door has frictional engagement in closing. it will also be noted that the second named link has swinging movement not only parallel to the face of the door amb but at right angles thereto.
t will be seen that this construction is very simple, that it may be very cheaply made, that it may be readily assembled, and
that if either of the balls become worn and do not operate properly other balls may be readily put in place, and that if either of the links should become bent or broken other links may be readily substituted. The parts are easily adjusted and after once being adjusted the check requires no attention. F urthermore, this check can be used either on right hand swinging doors or left hand swinging doors by simipl reversing the link 20. I t is obvious that s ight changes might be made in the form ofthe parts and their arrangement without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

globular bum-per mounted upon this last named upwardly extending portion, the last named bumper being disposed in a plane inward of the first named bumper, the last named buffer being formed to provide a roughened surface with'which the door is adapted to frictionallyengage.

A door check comprising a bracket formed of a single piece of wire and attachable to a door jamb, the bracket being formed to provide an eye, arms extending at right angles to the eye, a link having a straight portion and a coil at the upper end of the straight portion surrounding one of said arms and pivotally engaged therewith, the link at its lower end being bent to form an eye, then extended upward and outward second named link carrying a bumper,
and then upward, a globular, elastic bumper mounted upon this upward extension, and asecond link formed atflits upper end to provide a loop engageable with said eye, the link extending downwardly and laterally below said 100p and then extended upwardly and laterally in an-opposite direction, and a globular, elastic bumper-mounted upon said last named portion, the first named bumper being disposed in a plane in advance of the second named bumper.
6. The combination with a door and a door jamb therefor, of means mounted upon the door jamb for checking the door comprising a link door jamb for movement in a plane parallel to the face thereof, a bumper mounted upon the lower end of'the link and projecting in front thereof, a second link swingingly engaged with the first named link and oscillatable with the-first named link or independently thereof in the same plane as the first named link or independently oscillatable in a plane at right anglesthereto, the the bracket supporting said bumpers in front of the face of the jamb and with portions of the bumpers disposed in the path of movement of the door.
