COLUMIJA PLANOGIAPH 470-. WASHINGTON, D. c.
To all whom it may concern a UNITED, STATES PATE O I g STRATFORD i2. ALLEN, or CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
, DE ICE Eon FILLING DRAWING-PENIS, 2
'Be it known that I, S'rnA'rroRn B. ALLEN, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Devices for Filling Drawing-Pens, of which the following is a specification. I Y
This invention relates to a device for filling drawing pens.
The object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which a drawing pen may be quickly filled without smearing ink upon the outside of the pen.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for quickly cleaning the pen of dried ink. I
A still further object isto provide a convenient supply of absorbent material to remove any ink from the outside of'the pen in case some should be "spilled thereon.-
I will describe my invention in the following specification and point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims.
In'the accompanying "drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the device complete showing the method of filling a ruling pen, and Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe device.
As illustrated in the drawing the device comprises a cylindrical shell 1, preferably of metal, set into a cap 2 having a hole 3 into which a small tube 4 is inserted. The top of the shell 1 is closed by a cap 6, which fits said shell closely. The top cap 6 is provided with a filling inlet, which is closed by a removable plug 8, and said cap is also provided with a screw threaded bushing 10, which forms a guide for the upper end of a valve stem or rod 12. Aflixed to the lower end of the valve stem 12 is a metal disk 14,
which is faced on itsunder side with 'a disk of rubber or other suitable material 16 and adapted to fit the outlet 3. Depending from r the lower end of the valve stem, is a wire 18 disk 14 andthe inner end of the bushing 10.
The valve is raised from its seat by a bellcrank lever 22, fulcrumed at 24 in cars 26 projecting laterally from the top. cap 6. The horizontal arm 28 of the lever 22 is adapted to engage the under side of, a head or button 30 on the upper end of the valve I I Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Deml'Y, Application filed December 7, 1911. Serial No. 664,367.
fingers 32, for guiding the pen 34 as it is said fingers being slightly above and in line with the discharge end of the tube 4.
- The ink reservoir, composed of the cylinder 1andcaps2 and 6,is'moun'ted on a base 86, which is preferably made :of metal, and is cut away on one side to allow the nibs of the pen to be brought underthe filling tube 4.
inserted in the guide 32, with the discharge Then the pen is pressed inward, and with'it ing the arm 28 of said le'vern, The arm 28 engages the button 30 on the valve stem and raises the latter, and with itthe disks 14 and 16 are raisedfromthe valve seat. Thus the outlet 3 and tube 4 are opened, and the the space between the nibs of the pen 34,
is released and. the parts are restored to normal position with the flow of ink out off.
of the valve stem moves back and forth obstruction formed by the drying up and consequent hardening of exposed ink at the discharge end of said tube. 2
The pen cleaner is composed of two strips of metal 40, 41, which may conveniently be are bentto form a fork or guide for the pen. A thin piece of brass or other metal 42 is held between the strips 40, 41, preferably by a screw 44. To clean the pen it is inserted between the strips 40, 41 with the metal strip42 between the nibs, then the penis drawn upward and the strip 42 passes between the two points ofthe pen, forcing out any dried ink or foreign matter lodged therein. The pen wiper is conveniently mounted on tube 50 slotted throughone side as at 52 and set into a socket. 54 formed on the base 36, or the tube may be made with a metal bottom. The tube is filled with disks 56 of The soiled pen is insertedthroughthe slot placed in filling position, the junction of end of the tube 4 between the nibs of the pen.
ink is permitted to flow therethrough into which is then filled .witlithe amount desired. In withdrawing the pen the lever 22 The wire 18 depending fromthe lower end.
through the discharge tube to maintain a free passage for the ink, and breaks upany secured to the wall of the cylinder 1, and.
' stem 12. 'The lower endof the vertical arm of theflever 22 is bifurcated to form" guiding The filling device is operated as follows The drawing pen is grasped in one hand'and the lower end of the lever. 22, thereby rais-l the base of the device and comprises a metal v blotting paper, or other suitable absorbent. x
52 and drawn over the topmost disk to wipe the former clean. When the topmost disk becomes soiled, it is removed to expose a clean disk. The supply of disks may be replenished from time to time.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I am aware that many modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction shown and described, but
lVhat I claim is l. A device for filling drawing pens, com prising an ink reservoir provided with a discharge tube, a valve for controlling the flow of ink through said discharge tube, and
a guide for the pen operatively connected to open said valve when the pen is moved into filling position.
2. A device for filling drawing pens, comprising an ink reservoir provided with a discharge pipe communicating with its lower end, a valve for controlling the flow of ink through said pipe, a lever connected to said valve, and a guide on said lever arranged to position the pen in correct relation with the outlet of said discharge pipe when said valve is opened.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
