SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,702, dated June 1, 1897. Application filed August 22, 1896. Serial No. 603,863. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES B. FISCHBAOH, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving-Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in shaving-brushes; and it consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claim.

The object of my invention is to construct a brush used for shaving purposes, and to effect certain improvements of this character whereby simple and efficient means shall be provided for forcing water into the brush and for readily controlling the flow.

It is also constructed to fill itself when said brush is placed in water, and at the same time when the brush is being used it supplies the bristles or hair of said brush with said water.

In applying the device it does not materially alter the shape of the brush, as by looking at the same, as in Figure 1, it appears to the eye as an ordinary shaving-brush.

Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a face view of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, taken through the handle,on the line a a of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is avertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line b b of Fig. 1, showing the manner in which my invention is constructed. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the handle, showing my invention therein.

In the drawings, 1 designates a brush-handle of the ordinary construction, and to which are secured the bristles or hairs 2, and firmly held thereto in any well-known manner. The handle 1 is provided with a bore 3, and at the lower portion of said handle 1 is an extension or teat 4,throughwhich is a bore 5,which communicates with the bore 3. In the top of the said handle 1 is an opening 6, and said opening extends to one side of said handle, as shown at 7. Within the said bore 3 is placed a bulb 8, of rubber or suitable material, said bulb 8 provided with an extension 9, which is passed through the projection or teat 4 and extends some suitable distance into the hair below the teat 4. At the upper portion of said bulb and to one side is alug or projection 10, formed of the same material, and in said lug or projection 10 is an eye ll. Said eye and lug extends through the opening formed on the side of the handle and is for the purpose of passing an elastic cord'12 therethrough. Said elastic cord 12 is passed through the eye 11 and around the handle 1', resting in the groove 13, formed on said handle. (See Figs. 1, 3, and 4.) This cord is for the purpose, when the bulb S is pressed upon if it does not react as promptly as it should, the cord has the action of a spring and has the tendency to withdraw the depressed portion to its normal position.

The operation of my invention is as follows: When any person desires to operate the brush, it is necessary that the shaving mug and brush be taken to the hydrant and water placed therein, as customary. While the water is in the said mug, the operator places the brush therein, and presses with one finger upon the bulb 8, through the side opening 7. He then releases the pressure and the reaction of said bulb sucks the water therein through the end 9. WVhen the brush has been filled with the necessary amount of water, he proceeds to make the lather required for shaving. Should the lather after being placed upon the face of the person to be shaved become dry, the barber or person using the brush presses his finger upon the bulb, as before described, thus forcing sufficient amount of Water into the brush, bristles, or hair in order to moisten or thin the lather in said brush, so it can be again placed upon the face without placing the brush in the mug foranewsupply. Thebrushafterbeingused contains some amount of soap, and when the water contained in the bulb is forced upon the hair or bristles of the brush a lather can be made by the usual action of the brush upon the face of the person to be shaved. This, being an advantage over the present brushes, is also a soap-saver and can be easily manipulated.

Having fully described my intention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa In an improved shaving-brush, composed of a handle, the top of said handle having an opening and also to one side, a bulb placed in said handle through said opening, said opening also for the purpose of allowing the bulb to be pressed upon, alug provided with an eye formed on said bulb, and projecting through the said opening on the side of said handle, an elastic cord passed through said eye, and around the handle, said cord resting in a groove formed around said handle, 10 substantially as shown and described.
