UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALPHEUS FAY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, AND JOHN MONAB, OF LOISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,536, dated August 11, 1896.
Application filed January 4, 1896. Serial No. 574,293. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALPHEUS FAY, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, and JOHN MCNAB, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication.
Our invention relates to folding beds; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.
rIhe invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the bed folded up7 as when not in use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the bed drawn out for use. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the casing of the bed, which may be in the form of a bookcase, bureau, or other object. Located in this casing are a number of tubes 2, with which telescope or engage other tubes 3 and 4, which form the bed-bottom.
The numeral 5 designates the front of the bed, to which are secured rods 5, which iit in the tubes 4, and said front is provided with casters 6.
`The numeral 7 designates the mattress, secured to one end of the front of the bed, and has connected at the rear or inner end ropes 8, which pass back of a transverse roller 9 and then upward over pulleys 10, located in said casing. From this pulley said ropes extend to pulleys 10a, journaled in the casing, and pass through holes in the rims of the pulleys.
Telescoping tubes and rods similar to tubes 2, 3, and 4 and rods 5a are provided at each side of the bed and are located above the latter, so as to form the sides of the bed. Located in the said tubes are coiled springs 12,
the tendency of which is to force the tubes outward. Secured to the rods 5a are cords or ropes 13, which pass through the said tubes and around pulleys 14, and from thence extend to and are secured to the pulleys 10a. The pulleys 10a are fixed to a shaft 15, provided with a removable crank for rotating the same.
Pivoted to the interior of the casing is a rod 16, to which is secured a pawl 16, which engages with a ratchet-Wheel 17, secured to the shaft 15.
In practice by pulling upon the front of the bed the tubes will be drawn out, forming the bottom thereof, upon which the mattress will be supported. To fold up the bed, the shaft 13 is turned by means of the crank, which will draw the mattress up into the casing and cause the tubes to telescope into each other, so that the apparatus will assume the form shown in Fig. 1. The coiled springs in the tubes assist in forcing the bed outward when it is to be opened. Located in the said casing is a transversely-movable bed 18, which may be drawn in and out.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is 1. In a folding bed, the combination with the casing, the movable front provided with casters, the rods secured thereto, the telescoping tubes forming the bed-bottom, the side telescoping tubes located above the same, the mattress secured to said front, the ropes secured to said rods and mattress and the pulleys and shaft; substantially as described.
2. In a folding bed, the combination with the casing, the movable front provided with casters, the rods secured thereto, the telescoping tubes forming the bed-bottom, the side telescoping tubes, the coiled springs located in said tubes, the mattress secured to said front, the cords or ropes, the pulleys, the shaft and ratchet-wheel, the pivoted rod and pawl; substantially as described.vr
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto aliiXed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ALPHEUS FAY. JOHN MONAB. Witnesses:
EDGAR SLAGK, CHARLES B. AVEY.
