' N o M 0 d e l H. G. SCARBOROUGH. HHHH ASTENER.
\ Patented June 23, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY G. SCARBOROUGH, OF BISHOPVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
HAT-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'latent No. 562,556, dated June 23, 1896.
A li i m d November 22, 1895. Serial No. 569 ,860. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. SCARBOR- OUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bishopville, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Ladies Hats on the Head; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for holding a lad ys hat and preventing the same from being blown off of her head.
It has for its objects, among others, to provide a'simple and cheap device .applicable to any style or size of hat, and which may be readily removed therefrom when desired, and which when in position can be easily and quickly applied to the hair to hold the hat to the same. It embodies a flexible adjustable band having hooks to engage in the lining or body portion of the hat, and pins ,to engage in the hair.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let.- ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved l1at-holder shown in position within a hat. ment, showing the manner of adjusting the same to different-sized hats.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts a series of holes or notches a and at the other end with a hook or analogous device a, adapted to be engaged in said holes to hold the band in its closed position and to adapt the same to be adjusted to accommodate the Fig. 2 is a detail view of the improve.
hat with which it is to be used. At suitable points upon the band are placed the hooked any required position, these pins or wires be ing disposed substantially vertically, and somewhat curved, so as to be readily inserted in the hair on the top of the head, While to the rear and held in suitable loops or analogous devices (1 on the under edge of the band, so as to have pivotal movement, are the pins or wires D, which have their free ends extending toward each other and are adapted to engage the knot of hair at the back of the head. By these means the hat will be socurely held to the head.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as new isl. A device for the purpose described, comprising a flexible band having means for its adjustment, hooks on said band for attaching it to a hat, and pins pivotally mounted on the band to engage the hair to retain the hat upon the head and retaining-loops on said band for the pins, substantially as described.
2. A device for the purpose described, comprising a flexible band having means for adjusting it as to size, hooks vertically disposed upon said band to attach it to a hat, and pins pivotally mounted upon said band to engage the hair to hold the hat upon the head and loops on the lower edge of the band in which said pins are engaged, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY e. SCARBOROUGH.
