BOX FOR MAILING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,535, dated June 2, 1896. A li ti filed October 21,1895. Serial No. 566,280. (No model.)
T0 or whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM L. Bonn, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Sending Small Articles Through the Mails; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference'marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to boxes that are used to inclose breakable articles sent through the mail; and the object of my improvement is to make a light, cheap, and convenient box that will not be crushed by any ordinary use.
To accomplish the desired result, I make the box in two parts, one of which fits snugly into the other. The top and bottom and one end of the outer portion is reinforced by a thin metal strip that is held in place by the paper covering being pasted over it. The inner or drawer portion of the box is also provided with a similar metal reinforcingstrip that passes around both of the sides and one end of this part of the box. The free ends of this metal reinforcing-strip project some distance beyond the outer end of the box, and when the two parts are fitted together these projecting ends are bent over, thus permanently fastening the two parts of the box together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a View of one end of the box. Fig. II is a sectional view of the closed box on line A B of Fig. III. Fig. III is a'view of the end of the box opposite to that shown in Fig. I. Fig. IV is a sectional view of the drawer removed from the outer or box portion and showing the metal reinforcing-strip with the projecting ends. Fig. V is a sectional view of the outer portion of the box on line A B, Fig. III. Fig. VI is a side view of the inner or drawer portion and the metal reinforcing-strip. Fig. VII is a sectional view of the outer or box portion on line C D, Fig. III.
A represents the outer or cover portion of thebox, which is rectangular in shape and ordinarily constructed of paper or pasteboard, with both ends open.
B is a thin metal strip secured around the D is a thin metal strip secured around both sides and one end of the drawer C.
d cl are the projecting free ends of the strip D.
The article to be mailed is placed in the drawer O, which is then slid into the cover portion A. The projecting ends d cl of the strip D will extend beyondthe end of the cover portion and are bent over on the part1) of the metal strip B in the position shown in Fig. III, thus securely locking the parts together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mailing-box having a metal strip extending along the top and bottom and one end thereof, in combination with a drawer having a metal strip along its sides, said strip having projecting ends adapted to bend over upon the metal strip closing the end of the cover, substantially as shown.
2. In a mailing-box the combination of the outer cover A, having a metal strip extending across one end thereof, with the sliding drawer 0, provided with metal strips having projecting ends adapted to bend over upon a metal strip extending across the end of the cover, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a mailing-box,the outer cover A,having secured thereon the metal reinforcingstrip B, extending along the top and bottom and across one end thereof, in combination with the sliding drawer 0, having secured thereon the reinforcing-strip D, extending along both sides of said drawer and provided with the projecting ends d, d, adapted to bend over upon the part b, of the strip B, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM L. BOND. Witnesses:
