THOMAS W. S. PHILLIPS, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO GEO. BORG- FELDT & 00., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
PACKAGE.
Application filed September 4, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. S. PHIL- LIPS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, county of VVestchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to packages, containers or receptacles and has for its object to provide a container, receptacle or in fact a package of any kind in which devices of any distinctive character or symbolical of any event or particular season of the year are incorporated in such a manner as to be easilyremovable without detection or injury to the package if the said package remains unsold or undisposed of after the season for its use or the particular event or season of the year symbolized by the devices has passed.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter, and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompany-- ing drawings in which Figure l is a plan view of one form of my improved package, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof with line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings I have illustrated my in vention in the form of a package intended for presentation purposes at Christmas time although it is to be distinctly understood that this is only an example used for the purpose of illustrating and describing my improvement, and that my improved paclo age may be arranged in many other and varied ways and take many other and different forms.
As shown, the package comprises a recep tacle having a body 5 and a cover 6 fitting thereon and closing the same. On its upper surface the said cover 6 is provided with a label 7 upon which illustrations and information descriptive of the contents may be produced in any usual and convenient manner. This label 7 is secured to the cover 6 by any suitable means, as for instance, by pasting, and in such a manner that the label is attached only at spaced points along its periphery leaving the portions of the label intermediate of said points absolutely free and detached from the cover. In the present instance, the device symbolic of Christmas time comprises a band 8 of paper or Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1913. Serial No. 718,443. I
other suitable and flexible material which is embellished with holly leaves and berries or other illustrations characteristic of this particular season of the year. The said band 8 extends beneath the relatively free portions of the label 7 and surrounds the cover at the top and sides thereof, the free ends of said band being folded inwardly and clamped between the contacting surfaces of the said cover and the body 5 when the package is closed. This clamping just described is preferably the only medium used for maintaining said band 8 in position on the package against any movement in the direction of the bands length, although if desired said ends may be lightly fastened to said cover. In addition to this, if desired, the cover may be secured on the body by means of a cord, ribbon or similar device 9 which also extends beneath the relatively free portions of the label 7 and completely surrounds the package with its free ends suitably tied together in a conventional manner, as for instance, in a bow. The ribbon 9 preferably passes above the band 8 or, in other words, between said band and the label 7, and when tied in position thus engages said band 8 and assists in securing it against movement in the direction of its length.
It will readily be seen that my improved package thus fills all the requirements of a perfect Christmas package, or package symbolical of any other special occasion or having any other desired distinctive character, and is extremely ornamental and novel in appearance. If any of the packages remain unsold after the event or season of the year symbolized thereby or the necessity for the distinctive characterization has passed, all that is necessary is to remove the ribbon 9 and the cover 6 from the body 5. This leaves the ends of the band 8 free to be detached after which the said band 8 may be easily withdrawn from beneath the label 7 and entirely removed or separated from the cover. After this has been done, the cover minus the band 8 may be repositioned on the body 5 and the ends of the ribbon 9 again tied together so that the package is again complete and free from any symbolical or distinctive characteristics other than those descriptive of the contents and may be sold as an ordinary package of merchandise. Vith my improvement, it is thus possible in a simple and convenient manner to convert packages havin symbolical or special characteristics salab le only at particular times, to ordinary packages which may be sold at any time or season. The great financial loss which ordinarily attends the disposition of packages particularly distinctive of certain periods or events after such periods or events have passed, is thus entirely obviated. At the same time, by simply maintaining a supply of symbols on hand, a merchant may convert an ordinary package into a package having certain symbolical characteristics whenever occasion arises so that all demands for any particular kind of package may be met in a simple and inexpensive manner.
As before stated, the package may be of any type and the bands or other symbols may be also'changed to fill any particular requirements.
Various changes in the particular construction shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A package comprising a body, a cover fitting on said body, a label secured to said cover at spaced intervals and having portions intermediate of said intervals free from the cover, and a symbolical band entirely free from said cover and freely slidable beneath the free portions of said label,
said symbolical band having its opposite free ends frictionally held between said cover and said body whereby said band is maintained against movement relatively to the cover.
2. A package comprising a body, a cover fitting on said body, a label secured to said cover at spaced intervals and having portions intermediate of said intervals free from the cover, a symbolical band entirely free from said cover and freely slidable beneath the free portions of said label, said symbolical band having its opposite free ends frictionally held between said cover and said body whereby said band is maintained against movement relatively to said cover, and a ribbon or the like extending transversely above said band and beneath the free portions of said label and surrounding said package whereby the cover and body are secured against relative movement to each other and the band is held in engagement with the cover.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
