To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS IV. S. PrnLLn-s, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Packages, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to packages, containers or receptacles and has for its object to provide a package of any type with a label, the label to be combined therewith in such a manner as to be securely and elfecf tively held in position on the package and so as to be readily removable therefrom when desired without defacing any portion of the package or marring the appearance thereof.

A further object of my improvement is to incorporate in the package a device symbolical of any event or particular season of the year which device is also readily removable, independently of the label, and with out injury to the latter or to the package, if the said package remains unsold or undisposed of after the reason for its particular use or when the particular event or season of the year symbolized by the device has passed.

My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty Will be pointed out in the appended claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of my improved package and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken respectively on the lines 22 and 3-3of Fig. 1.

In the drawings I have illustrated my invention in the form of a package intended for presentation purposes at Christmas time although it is to be distinctly understood that this is only an example used for the purpose of illustrating and describing my improvement and that the latter may be arranged in many other and varied ways and incorporated in many other and different types of packages.

As shown in the drawings the package comprises a receptacle having a body 5 and a cover 6 fitting thereon and closing the same and movable relatively to the body. The package includes a label 7 upon which illustrations and information descriptive of the contents may be produced in any convenient and ornamental manner. erably located near the periphery of the la bel at opposite points thereof as shown, and through which a ribbon, cord or the like 9 is threaded, the said ribbon, cord or the like 9 passing through one slot 8, beneath the label and out of the other slot, so that said label 7 is strung upon said ribbon or the like 9 as will be clearly apparent. The said ribbon or the like 9 may pass completely aboutthe package and have its free ends tied together or otherwise secured; or the said ribbon may simply extend for instance about the cover 6 and have its ends secured thereto in any convenient manner, for instance, as shown. In either case the said ribbon or the like in addition to any other function which it may serve, provides a means for holding the label 7 in position on the package and in substantial surface-engagement for instance with the cover there of, the label being otherwise free from said cover and having no fixed connection therewith other than that produced by the ril bon, cord or the like. In the illustrated example-the said label 7 is provided with additional slots or apertures 10 preferably located on an imaginary line extending transversely to an'imaginary line on which the slots 8 are located, the slots 10 also being preferably positioned near the periphery or edge of the label 7. In the present instance the symbolical. device comprises a band 11 of paper or other suitable and flexible material symbolical of Christmas time and suitably embellished with holly leaves andberries and other illustrations charac teristic of this particular season of the year. This band 11 is threaded through the slots 10 as shown and extends transversely to the ribbon 9 over the top and sides of the cover 6 with its free ends folded inwardly and clamped between the contacting surfaces of said cover 6 and the body 5 when the pack age is closed. This frictional clamping just ('lescribed preferably the only medium for holding said band 11 in position on the package although if desired the free ends maybe lightly fastened to the cover preferably on the inner surface thereof. The band 11, in addition to being maintained in proper position on the package by the label. 7 itself serves in conjunction with the ribbon 9 to secure the said label against unintentional movement and in a substantially smooth and flat condition in surface engagement With the cover 6. The slots or apertures 8 and 10 are of sufficient dimensions to readily accommodate the ribbon 9 and band 11 and preferably follow the contour of the periphery of the label or a portion of said periphery or of some of the ornamentations'on said label so as to be substantially invisible when the ribbon or band is removed or is not in place.

' sity for the distinctive characterization has passed, all that is necessary is to open or remove the cover 6 from the body 5. lhis leaves the ends of the band 11 free to be detached, after which the said band 11 may 7 be easily withdrawn from the slots 10 and symbolical or entirely removed or separated from the cover without injury either to the label or to the package itself. After this has been done, the cover minus the band 11 may be repositioned on the body 5, so that the package isagain complete and free from any distinctive characteristics other than those descriptive of the contents included on the label and maybe sold as an ordinary package of merchandise.

With my improvement, it is thus possible in a simple and convenient manner to convert packages having symbolical or special characteristics," salable only at particular times, into ordinary packages which may be sold at any time or season The great financial loss which ordinarily attends the dis- .position of packages particularly distinctive of certainperiods or events after such periods or events have passed, 1s thus entlrely obviated. At the same time, by simply keeping a supply of symbols on hand, a merchant may convert an ordinary package pro vided with my improvement into a package having certain symbolical characteristics whenever occasion arises and he may thus meet all demands for any particular kind of package in a simple and inexpensive'manner.

Inaddition to this the label 7 which is not pasted in position may afterward be readily detached from the package by simply slipping it from the ribbon 9 or tearing it therefrom without in any way. defacing any portion of the package or marring the appearance'thereof. The ribbon 9 may itself be removed at the same occasion, without disfiguring the package. In this manner all advertising and added decorative matter may be completely and efiiciently removed,

leaving the container in its initial unad orned condition, and free from such blemishes as would be produced by removing a label secured to the package by pasting or otherwise. The containers themselves may thus be made in handsome material and as ornamental as desired, and by being available for use without any discordant or inappropriate matter thereon represent an addi tional attraction and value to the purchaser or receiver of the package. The commercial value and salability of the package is thus materially increased and at the same time the containers may if desired be utilized to contain different products as the demand for certain goods at one season is superseded by a demand for another type of goods later on.

It will of course be apparent that the label 7 and band 11 and the said cord, ribbon or the like 9 may be removed concurrently or independently of each other, the band 11 being held in place if the label is removed and the label being similarly held if the band is detached. The band 11 in some cases instead of passing through slots 10 of the label 7 as shown may simply extend transversely beneath said label.

As before stated, the package may be of any type and the bands or other symbols may be also changed to fill any particular requirements.

It will of course be understood that as the shape of the receptacle differs from the rectangular one shown in the drawings, more than one ribbon, cord or the like 9 and more than one symbolical band or other device 11. may be included in the package and combined with the label 7 in the same manner as herein shown and described.

Various changes in the particular construction shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

A package comprising a body, a. cover fitting on the same, a label provided with slots arranged in opposite pairs, a ribbon. or the like secured to said package and extending through one pair of slots and beneath the label whereby the latter is held in position on said cover and is otherwise free therefrom and a symbolical band extending through the other pair of slots beneath the label and transversely to the ribbon or the like, said band having its opposite free ends frictionally clamped between said body and said cover and being otherwise free from the latter,
