DISPLAY PACKAGE Filed lay 8, 1962 i BY Co zoZino HTTONE Y United States Patent O 3,135,384 DISPLAY PACKAGE Alfred R. Cozzoiino, Wayne, NJ., assignor, by mesne assignments, to Union Bag-Camp Paper Corporation, New York, N.Y., a corporation of Virginia Filed May 8, 1962, Ser. No. 193,113 1 Claim. (Cl. 20G-80) This invention relates to packages and more particularly to a display package in which an article of merchandise may be packed, distributed and ultimately displayed to the consumer.
Heretofore, articles of merchandise have been packed, distributed and ultimately displayed in a package which is attractive and unique comprising a relatively stiff sheet having an apertured portion with the article being maintained in position by a thin layer of film or plastic material passing through the opening and carrying the article. This package has been extremely popular and successful. Under certain conditions, however, it is found desirable to eliminate the thin layer of film or plastic material.
Therefore, it isan object of the present invention to provide a simple yet unique package in which an article of merchandise may be packed, distributed and ultimately displayed to the consumer without utilizing any lm or plastic material therein, thereby to present a less expensive but nevertheless attractive display package.
Still another object is to provide a display package in which the article packed and displayed thereon is rendered readily accessible.
Another object is to provide a display package that is relatively inexpensive, relatively simple in structure, easy to manufacture, and positive in operation.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent when considered in view of the drawing in which:
FIG. l is a front elevational view of the novel cardtype package of the instant invention.
FIG. 2 is a section View of the card-type package taken along line 2*-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 illustrates a modified form of the card package in accordance with this invention.
FIG. 4 illustrates another modified form of the card package of the present invention.
FIG. 5 is a section view taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
Referring to the drawings there is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, one form of the improved card-type package 1li embodying the concept of the instant invention. As shown, the card package 19 of this invention comprises a blank 11 formed of a relatively at, stiff material, as for example, a fiat sheet of cardboard, paperboard, sheet plastic or the like, having a blanked-out or cutout portion to deiine an opening 12 therein. In the illustrated ernbodiment of FIGS. l and 2, blank 11 is rectangularly shaped, and the opening 12 therein is likewise rectangularly shaped and concentrically disposed. However, it will be understood that the shape or outline of the blank 11 and of the opening 12 therein may assume any desired configuration. Further, the opening 12 is sized and proportioned for receiving therein the article 13 to be displaced or packaged thereon.
In accordance with this invention there is secured to the backside of the blank 11, a sheet of material 14 having one side thereof coated with a layer of a suitable adhesive material 15. For example, the sheet of material 14 may comprise a sheet of paper, paperboard or the like coated with a layer of gum or other suitable pressure sensitive adhesive 15 bonded or covering one side thereof. Accordingly, the coated adhesive side 15 of the sheet material 14 is adhesively secured to the backside of the blank 11. As shown, for illustrative purposes,
the adhesive coated sheet of material 14 is proportioned to cover the entire opening 12 in blank 11. The adhesive side 15 of the strip or sheet of material 14 is therefore exposed to the front side of the blank through the opening 12, as best seen in FIG. 1.
Accordingly, the object or article 13 to be displayed or packages in the card package 10, described, is positioned within the opening 12 and it is adhesively secured to the adhesive coated side 15 of the sheet material 14. Thus the article 13 is retained and held in position within the opening of blank 11 by the bonding or holding quality inherent in the adhesive layer or side 15 of sheet 14.
In the illustrative embodiment, the article 13 to be packaged is shown and disclosed as a bottle containing a suitable produce of commercial, as for example, perfume, nail polish or other liquid or powdered contents. In lieu of a bottled product, it will be understood that a .boxed product may be likewise adhesively secured to side 15 of sheet 14 and displayed in the card package 10 described.
To facilitate the displaying of the package 1t) the card blank 11 may be provided with a punched-out aperture 16 adjacent the upper edge of the blank 11. Therefore, a hanger arm of a suitable display rack, not shown, may be inserted through aperture 16 and, if desired, a plurality of card packages 10 may be conveniently displayed on the counter of a retail outlet.
It will be understood that while the sheet material 14, shown in FIG. 1, is entirely coated with adhesive material, the package may be made with only the perimeter portion of the sheet material 14 being coated With the adhesive as shown in FIG. 3. In this embodiment of the invention the perimeter portion 14a is provided with the adhesive coating and the backing sheet nevertheless supports the article in position by reason of the fact that a portion of the perimeter bearing the adhesive is in contact with the perimeter of the article as shown. To facilitate access to the article from the rear a serrated section in the shape of a tab 14h is provided on the back of the sheet material 14.
FIGS. 4 and 5 illustrate a modified form of the invention. In this form of invention, the package 20 comprises a blank 21 of suitable material of the kind as hereinbefore described with reference to the form of the invention of FIGS. 1 and 2. According to this form of the invention the blank 21 has a portion thereof cut out to define opening 22. However, in this form, opposed iiaps 23, 24, integral with blank 21, and made out of the cutout portion of the blank which defines the opening, are folded about their respective fold lines F1, F2 outwardly of the blank to define upper and lower ledges to provide additional support for the article 25 as will hereinafter be described.
As shown, each of the flaps 23, 24 are folded so as to be disposed substantially normal to the plane of the blank 21. Secured to the backside of the blank 21 is a strip or sheet of material 26, which is coated on one side thereof with a suitable adhesive layer or coat 27 as hereinbefore described. In this form of the invention, the article 25 to be displayed and carried on the package is adhesively secured to the coated side 27 of the sheet material blank within the circumference of the opening 22 and between the flaps 23 and 24. The upper and lower flaps or ledges 23, 24 cooperate with the adhesive bond of the strip material 26 to firmly support the article 25 therebetween. An aperture 28 may be provided for reason hereinbefore described. From the foregoing description it will be readily apparent that either card- type package 10 or 20 of this invention is relatively simple in construction, can be readily manufactured with a minimum of operational steps, and which is positive in operation.
matassa Further, it is to be noted that the article displayed on the card package or 2@ is rendered readily accessible to the consumer. The article displayed may be subjected to closer inspection prior to purchase by a consumer. By reason of the inherent construction of the card package 10 or 20 of this invention, many of the operational steps required in the manufacture of the heretofore known type of card packages can be eliminated. In addition, it is to be noted that the card package 10 or 2li of this invention is readily adapted for displaying and retailing numerous articles of manufacture, and that the specic shape or conguration of the package described can be varied as required to accommodate an article to be displayed therein.
It will be understood that the opening 12 or 22 in either blank 10 or 2t) respectively may be proportioned to exactly outline the article to be displayed, if desired. ln this manner, only that portion of the strip of adhesive material secured to` the back of the respective blanks will be exposed to the front of the blank through the respective opening and the exposed portion of the adhesive strip will conform to the shape of the article and form the contact surface for the article to` be displayed therein. Consequently, maximum surface area is ailorded to the front of the respective blanks to accommodate printed matter used in conjunction with sale and distribution of the article packaged thereon.
While the instant invention has been disclosed with reference to several particular embodiments thereof, it is to be appreciated that the invention is not to be taken as limited to all the details thereof as inodications and variations thereof may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
I claim:
