UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGINA BARNES, AOE MELBOURNE, VICTORIA.
BooK CovER'AND MARKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,306, dated November 5, 1895.
Application filedAugust 9, 1895. Serial No. 558,75 '7. (No model.) Patented in New South Wales March 27, 1894, No. 493,720.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGINA BARNES, a married woman, a British subject, and a resident of No. 25 Albert Road, Albert Park, near Melbourne, in the Colony of Victoria, have invented a certain new and useful ImprovedRemovable Combined Book Cover and Marker, (for which I have obtained a patent in and for the Colony of New South Wales, bearing date March 27,1894,No. 493,720) of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide a readily-adjustable book cover and marker combined, to be adjusted on and used on any book of suitable size when the book is being read, used, or handled, s o as to lessen the wear and tear and frictional damage consequent on the handling of the book.
The said invention is also applicable as a cover for postal packets.
My said cover and marker consists of four ilat pieces of cardboard or other suitable material, laced together or otherwise attached by bands of elastic or other flexible material, a piece of thin cloth or other suitable material being provided, attached to the edge of one or other of the inner flat pieces, so as to cover and protect the back of the book when connected thereto, as hereinafter described, one or other of the end pieces serving when so applied as a book-mark.
That my said invention may be more readily understood I shall now more particularly and in detail describe same with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is an elevation of the outer side of the device distended. Fig. 2 is a view of of the opposite side. Figs. 3 and 4L are elevations of the opposite sides of a modified,
form of cover and marker. Figs. 5 and 6 show a book with the invention applied thereto.
- Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the marker comprises two cover portions B C, adapted to lie against the sides of the book, and smaller leaves or portions A D, adapted to serve as markers by being folded between the leaves of the book. These sections or leaves are separated from each other slightly, the distance between the sections B C being sufficient to accommodate the back of the book, while the space between B or C and its adjacent section A or D is sufficient to allow these sections to be turned into position between the leaves of the book. The sections are connected by bands d, of elastic material, eX- tending across the space between the sections and secured at points x by pins, staples, or glue.
A piece of cloth F or other eXible material is attached to either the section B or the section C, and it extends over the space between the two sections, so as to cover the bookback. The free edge of this cloth will simply lie between the book and the section C or B, as the case might be. Elastic straps e on the sections B and C are adapted to pass over the sides of the book-back and hold the sections B and C thereto.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the'sections are the same; but the straps d, instead of being pinned to the sections, pass through the eyes or openings x thereof and are secured at their ends to the outer sections.
l. Abook cover and marker comprising the sections A, B, C, D, arranged with a space between them, the elastic bands rl connecting the sections and the cross bands cof elastic material on the sections B and C, substantially as described.
2. A book cover comprising the sections A, B, C, D, arranged with a space between them, the elastic bands d connecting the sections and the flexible piece F secured to one of the sections and extending across the space between the sections B and C.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGINA BARNES.
