UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL HUGHES, OF LINDSAY, CANADA.
BERTH-CURTAIIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,056, dated. July 2, 1895.
Application filed May 21, 1894. fierial No. 511,951. (No model.)
. Lindsay, in the county of Victoria and Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Berth-Curtains; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention, which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, relates to curtains for berths and similar objects.
Theobject of my invention is a ventilated curtain for berths in sleepers and the like.
Figure 1 is an elevation of curtains having my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the ventilators on a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same from the interior, showing it open. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same from the interior, showing it closed and having a different fastening.
At the place where it is desired to ventilate a curtain A a transverse curved (or angular) incision a is made in. it, thus forming a lap A in the material, which is still integral with it at a transverse line 2, which may be called the base-line-of said lap or portion. To this lap A is secured a piece B, substantially rectangular, a little wider than the base 2 and considerably higher than the depth of the lap A, being placed between said portion and the main curtain and sewed or otherwise secured across the base 2 of the former and around its edge a. It is also secured along the side edges b b to the main curtain, but so that its upper edge b is longer than the corresponding portion of the curtainwhich, it covers, so that it is slack and bags or bulges and affords a free upward passage through from the outside at the base-line to the upper edge b of the piece B on the inside. A suitable fastening, such as a strap and buckle (land 0', as shown in Fig. 4, or loop and button c and o, as shown in Fig. 5, or other form, is provided on the inside of the curtain A and the upper edge of the piece B. This contrivance forms a kind of a pocket Without bottom, which may be opened or closed at will, and when open allows a free current of air to pass from the outside to the inside of-the curtain. Any number of such pockets may be provided in each curtain and in such positions as may be desired. The laps A may be made semicircular, as shown, or they may be rectangular or any other shape.
I claim as my invention The combination with a curtain of a lap having an upper free edge formed by a curved or angular incision passing in a transverse direction and a substantially rectangular piece B placed between said lap and the main curtain and secured to said lap across the base line and along its edge and to the main curtain along the side edges 6 b of said piece so as to form a slack upper edge, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed in the presence of the undersigned witnesses.
. SAM. HUGHES.
Witnesses A. HARVEY, A. Tnowsn.
