UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE w. MAYNARD, or LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-VENTILATION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,549, dated March 7, 1876; application tiled November 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MAYNARD of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Oar-Ventilator and Cinder and Dust Guard, of which the following is aspecification:
The object of mysaid invention is tofurnish the traveling public with a neat and convenient ventilator and cinder and dust guard, so constructed, in two sections or parts and connected by a peculiar joint, that it can be easily and readily detached, and reduced to a small compass, thus allowing of its being carried in the pocket or valise, as may be desired;
and I do declare the following to be such a true and exact description of my invention as will enable others to make and use the same, like letters representing the same parts in each of the figures, of which- Figure l is a representation of a car-win dow with my ventilator and guard attached; Fig. 2, a sectional view taken at a a in Fig. 1, the arrows showing the direction of the current of air. Fig. 3 shows my improved guard and ventilator and its point of separation; Fig. 4, an enlarged section, showing the manner in which the two parts of my improved ventilator and guard are joined and held in place; and Fig. 5, a section of my invention,- taken at w .90, Fig. 3, and shows the manner in which the web is secured to the back or standard.
A is a frame representing the sash of a carwindow; B, a frame representing the case.- ment of a car-window frame; 0, one of the sectionsot' my improved ventilator and cinder and dust guard; D, the other section, the two beingjoined, as shown in Fig. 4, by one being grooved about the depth of one inch,
and the other having a tongue formed to closely fill the groove E E, the back'or post, having its point of separation diagonal, and its top so formed as to receive the lower edge of the sash, and its lower end provided with two small spurs, designed to keep the same in proper angular position relative to a car.
I have found by actual experiment that the most convenient size, and that producing the best results, is six inches wide by seventeen and one-half inches in length. This permits of the window of a car being raised to its full height, or nearly so, and at the same time prevents cinders or dust entering the same, an outward current being produced by its insertion in acar-window, so that a-person can even smoke before the window without filling the car with smoke, or in any way inconven-. iencing any one, and any number of the ventilators being placed in the same car does not affect the perfect operation of each.
If it-is desired to lower a car-window, it may be done and still use my invention by separating the two sections and use one section or part only.
The two sections of my improved ventilator and cinder and dust guard are secured together by atongue-and-groove joint, which presents the appearance of a continuous piece of wood, and possess'es'nearly the same strength. The top or upper part of my said ventilator and cinder and dust guard is so constructed.
that it passes above the lower edge of the sash, and thereby prevents cinders passingover the top and into a car.- The bottom or lower end is constructed to pass below the top of the stool of a window for a like purpose.
I am aware that ventilators have been in use similar in purpose and'design, and I make no claim thereto; but I am notaware that previous to my said invention a ventilator has been 111 use underv circumstances as above described.
I claim as my invention, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a carv'entilator and binder and dust guard, constructed substantially as described, the combination of the section 0 with the section D, substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
