A. G. NANCE. WINDOW GUARD.
Patented Apr. 29, 1890.
(7 x it a 4 l htmeowo I Q ww Art/$102 4. flkzwcg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR G. NANCE, OF SAVANNAH, MISSOURI.
WINDOW-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,676, dated April 29, 1890.
Application filed November 12, 1889. Serial No. 330,033. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR G. NANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the'county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Window Guard, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window-guards; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved guard in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view.
' I11 carrying out my invention I secure to the side of a railrway-car (for instance) between the windows of the same, the bracket A and the semicircular plate B, in and between which a pivoted screen or guard O is pivoted. This screen or guard is provided at its lower end with the horizontal stops or arms D, which are adapted to impinge against the side of the car and prevent the screen or guard closing entirely against the same. At its upper end the guard is provided with a vertical pin E, which travels around the edge of the semicircular plate B,and is adapted to be engaged by the spring-latches F on the edge of the said plate 13 to hold the guard with a yielding force to whichever side of the center it is placed or thrown. The space between the inner edge of the guard and the side of the car is closed or filled by a strip G, secured to the side of the car, as clearly shown.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my improved device will be readily understood. As the car moves over the road, the suction of the breeze created by the passage of the car will throw the guard rearward and the cinders will strike against the same and be thereby deflected from the side of the car, so that they will be prevented from passing through the windows and annoying the passengers. The cinders will be prevented from collecting between the guard and the car by the strip G, as will be readily understood.
My improved guard adjusts itself automatically, being thrown to one side or the other by the force of the wind, and willbe eltectually held in its adjusted position.
The device is very simple and its advantages are thought to be obvious.
Having thus described my invention,wl1at I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of the plate B,the bracket A, the guard pivoted to and extending between said plate and bracket, the pin at the upper end of the guard, and the spring-latches secured on the plate B and adapted to engage said pin, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of witnesses.
ARTHUR G. NANCE.
