UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ISAAO MOSS, OF ABBOTSFORD, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM DAVID BEAZLEY, OF ABBOTSFORD, AUSTRALIA.
SELF-LOCKING WlNDOW-FASTENER.
l'atented May 7, 1907.
Application filed January 2, 1907. Serial No. 350,349.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ISAAC Moss, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 196 Vere street, Abbotsford, in the State of Victoria, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Locking Window-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved window lock or catch and has been designed mainly for use in connection with railway and tramway cars and the like, in which the windows when raised to the desired height are required to be held in that position.
By my invention the use of springs is rendered unnecessary the mechanism of the lock being worked by gravitythe lock is simple in construction and not liable to get out of working order with the continual jolting of the car, and it is easy to operate which is of advantage to women and children desirous of opening or closing the windows of the car.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure l is a side elevation showing my lock attached to a window and in engagement with a rack. Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section showing the position of the dog or catch when the same is out-of engagement with the rack. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of my look, while- Fig. 4 is a plan view of the catch or dog.
I provide a metal casin which preferably consists of a front piece A having a slot A cut therein; projecting from the front piece, are two flat cheek pieces B and B one on either side of the slot Abetween the two cheek pieces the catch or dog O is eccentrically hung on a pin D. In its normal position the front of the catch or dog extends through the slot in the front piece and is shaped as shown at O; the catch or dog is provided at its rear end with a lifting thumb piece or finer plate E which extends a short distance on Both sides of the catch or dog forming flanges H and H, the flanges rest on top of the cheek pieces B and B which prevents the front O of the dog from rising above the po sition shown in Fig. 1. The casing before mentioned is provided with extending lugs J which have perforations K through which screws L are passed to secure the lock to the window M. N is a rack which may have any number of suitable teethwhen the window M is being raised the front O of the catch or dog on coming into contact with a tooth of the rack is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2; the catch will pass over the tooth and be brought again to the position shown in Fig. 1 by reason of the weight of the back part of the catch.
When it is desired to lower the window the catch or dog is released from engagement with the rack by raising the thumb piece E, the front C will then be in the position shown in Fig. 2 and the window may be lowered any desired distance-the thumb piece is then released and the catch or dog by engagement with the rack will hold the window in its new position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An improved window fastener comprising a casing provided with a front opening and rearwardly extended cheek plates, a dog eccentrically pivoted between said check plates and provided with a nose adapted to engage a rack, said dog being also provided with a finger piece or extension, said finger piece or extension being provided with lateral flanges and so wei hted as to normally tend to hold the nose 0 said dog projected through the front opening of said casing, the pivotal move ment of said dog being limited by said flanges engaging said cheek plates.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN ISAAC MOSS.
