IMPROVEMENT `IN DOOVER"CHE CKVS AND RETAINERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,551, dated May 6, 1873; application iiled March 19, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WoRsTER, of Athol, in the` county of VWorcester and State of A ll/.[assachusetts, have invented a new and useful Door Stop and Retainer, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specication:

My invention relates to a device in which are combined a door-stop and a means of fretaining the door and preventing itfrom being closed by a gust of wind;A and it consists in the combination of a socket containing a block of rubber or. other suitable elastic material with a latch formed in one piece with said socket, said socket and latch being formed on the outer end of a metallic bracket secured to the base -board, and so arranged that the latch will engage with a catch secured to the lower portion ofthe door, as will be more fully described. It further consists in the employment of an elastic material between the foot ot the stop and the base-board to increasethe spring of the latch and diminish the shock from the blow of the door.

In the drawing, Figure l is a front elevation of a closed door with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionV on line a' a' on Fig. 3 with the door open and Fig.3 is a horizontal section on line y y on Fig. 2.

A is the door-frame, and B the door, supt posed to be hung near the corner of a room,

and so arranged as to swing into the room. C represents the base-board of the wall at right angles to the wall in which the door is hung. D is a light metallic bracket, secured to the base-board G by means of the screws a passing through the flange D', and carrying, atits outer end, the latch b and a socket iilled with a block of.' rubber, c, or other elastic material. E is a metallic catch, secured to the lower rail of the door in any suitable manner. The bracket D has a packing, e, of rubber or other elastic material, placed between it and the baseboard C to serve as a spring to throw the outer end of the bracket up when the catch E has passed over the raised point on the upper side of the latch b, and also to allow the latch b to be thrown down as the catch E passes over it.V

rI he same result may be attained by making the bracket D, or that portion of it between the socket which contains the rubber stop c and the flan ge D, in the form of a spring that will yield in a vertical direction, and dispensing with the rubber packing c; but I think the rigid bracket with the rubber packing is 'Y preferable.

The operation of my invention is yas follows: If the door is swung back the bottom edge of the catch E strikes upon the outer incline on the' latch b, and, by its momentum and thev weight ofthe door, forces the outer end of the ,A

bracket D downward, the rubber packing e behind the flange D yielding at its lower side to allow of said movement, and expanding again as soon as the catch has passed over the points of the incline,- and raising the point of said latch into a recess formed for the purpose in the under side ofthe catch E, and the outer face of the catch E coming in contact with the rubber stop` c, the door is prevented from going further, and'is "retained inl such position until force is applied to it to close the door, when the bracket and latch will be thrown down, by the action of the catch E, upon the inner incline of the latch in the saine manner as before.

This device may be applied t0 doors r blinds with equally good results; and, therefore, I do not wish to conline myself to its use on doors; but- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

rlhe bracket D, cast or otherwise formed in one piece with the latch b, and provided with an elastic stop, c, in combination with the rubber packing or spring e and any suitable catch, E, when arranged, in combination with a door or blind, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
