Description
No. 870,386. PATENTEDNOV. 5, 1907.
G. ROBBINS. HANDLE FOR CARS.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 19, 1907.
UNITED STATES GEORGE ROBBINS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
HANDLE FOR CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907.
Application filed July 19, 1907. Serial No. 384.659-
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ROBBINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to handles for cars and particularly to handles for open summer cars, said handles being constructed in such manner and so arranged that it will be impossible for a passenger to grasp the handle of the side post of the seat that he occupies, but upon the contrary so arranged that passengers must grasp the handles of the side posts of the seat in front of them. In doing this, the passengers will of necessity be caused to face the front of the car, whereby accidents resulting from persons getting off of the cars backwards, will be prevented. In accomplishing this, I provide handles located upon opposite sides of the car and extending in opposite directions. It is a well known fact that cars of this character are not turned around at the end of their run, but upon the contrary the trolley isreversed and the cars run in an opposite direction.
It is also a well known fact that a bar or strap is passed along the inner side of the car to prevent passengers from alighting upon that side. The side of the car that is the inner side in going in one direction, will be the outer side when the car is moving in the opposite direction. These oppositely directed handles are therefore arranged so that they always project rearwardly from the side posts to which they are secured, by virtue of which it will be impossible as has been before stated, for passengers to grasp any handle other than the one supported by the side post of the seat in front of them.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car having handles constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of said handles, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the handle shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of handle, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the handle shown in Fig. 4, and, Fig. 6 isa horizontal section through the side posts of the car, illustrating the manner in which the handles project in opposite directions upon opposite sides of the car.
In the drawing, the numeral 5, designates the run- I ning board of an open or summer car and 6 designates the seats. Handles 7 are mounted upon side posts 8 upon both sides of the car,the handles upon one side of the car projecting in an opposite direction from the handles upon the opposite side of the car, by virtue of which construction the objects heretofore set forth, are attained.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such change as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What 1 claim, is:
The combination with an open car having side posts upon both sides thereof, of handles fixed to said side posts, the handles upon one side of the car projecting forwardly from the side posts and the handles upon the other side of said car projecting rearwardly from said side posts.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE ROBBINS.
Witnesses FRANK G. CAMPBELL,
A. L. PHELPS.
